Suppliers
unified for field device integration
The latest news on FDI
To
accelerate deployment of the Field Device Integration (FDI) technology, Key
Suppliers agreed to enlarge the scope of the EDDL Cooperation Team and will
become the FDI Cooperation.
This cooperation will initially consist of the
associations: FDT Group, Fieldbus Foundation, HART Communications Foundation,
OPC Foundation and PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation, as well as the companies ABB,
Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Honeywell, Invensys, Siemens, and Yokogawa.
The FDI project was kicked-off at 2007 Hanover Fair.
At this time ECT welcomed FDT Group with the primary objective of harmonizing
EDDL and FDT/DTM technologies.
The addition of supplier companies will strengthen this
effort by providing additional resources for the completion of this project.

PROFIenergy ensures energy efficiency
After
less than one year of development time, PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET
International) is now introducing PROFIenergy - a trendsetting PROFINET-based
solution for energy management of production equipment.
In
order to achieve a harmonized and standardized procedure for energy management,
representatives of AIDA (the Automation Initiative of German Automobile
Manufacturers) requested PI about a year ago to develop a solution. As part of
this solution, equipment is to be switched off not only during idle times, such
as weekends and holidays. Rather, it must also be possible to switch off
individual equipment components or entire systems during brief as well as unscheduled
pauses.
PROFIenergy,
the vendor-neutral energy savings profile now available, allows operators to
achieve effective energy management. The profile can be integrated into
individual components (for example, robots, lasers, controllers, or drives) by
means of a firmware update.
PI is meeting the requests of users who called for
a standardized operator input for parameterization, runtime, and diagnostics.
The working group, which includes device manufacturers and various
institutes and users, placed special emphasis on the suitability of the profile
for real-world application from the outset. This is an important requirement
for rapid implementation of PROFIenergy in products and solutions. Based on the
high level of customer interest, implementation into products is expected in
2010.
Members of PROFIBUS International (PI) can download the Profile from the web at http://www.profibus.com/nc/downloads/downloads/common-application-profile-profienergy/display/

Training places available ...
There are still a few places available on the following scheduled courses at MMU. Note, these are the last scheduled courses available until the new year.
PROFIBUS
Installer + Commissioning & Maintenance
Course - 8-9 December
Covers the practical techniques of faultfinding on "operational"
PROFIBUS networks. Techniques
taught on the course include the use of a modern PROFIBUS analyser and Class-II
master (engineering tool) to diagnose network faults, device faults and I/O
problems. Students also learn how to use a soft digital storage oscilloscope in
conjunction with these tools to diagnose and accurately locate cable, connection
and device faults.
