Got a fault? Hire's a Solution ...

ProfiTrace Ultra for hire

The PROFIBUS Competence Centre at MMU has introduced new PROFIBUS instrument hire service.  The first instrument on offer will be the ProfiTrace protocol analyser, used for fault-finding, monitoring, and health-checking of PROFIBUS DP and PA networks. While typically used for trouble-shooting PROFIBUS systems , the ProfiTrace is also commonly used for periodic health-checking on PROFIBUS systems or to verify that a new PROFIBUS installation  is correctly completed and to generate a report as a benchmark of the installation status.

For such applications it is often difficult to justify the permanent ownership of an instrument and it is for just this kind of situation the service has been introduced. MMU's hire service will also prove useful for companies wishing to evaluate an instrument before purchase or where there is an emergency that just cannot wait for the normal capital purchase procedure to lumber into action.

The service includes supply of the latest package of ProfiTrace Ultra hardware and software and a detailed booklet demonstrating how to trouble-shoot on a PROFIBUS system showing many examples of common faults to help identify specific problems. Email and telephone support is also offered during the hiring period.

Even with the documentation and support on offer, due to the sophisticated nature of the ProfiTrace protocol analyser, technicians really do need to know how to use it properly. For this reason MMU insist that intending hirers should themselves have attended either the Certified PROFIBUS Commissioning and Maintenance Course or The Certified PROFIBUS Engineer Course, or that companies use a sub-contractor that holds the appropriate certificates.

As use of the service grows, MMU intends to add more instruments to the list of equipment for hire, the main stipulation for which is that the products on offer are sold and supported in the UK by Vendor or Senior member companies of The PROFIBUS Group.

Virtual Exhibition Stand Has Movie Magic...

Burkert's Virtual Exhibition standBrkert UK has launched an exhibition stand with a difference - visitors don't need to leave their desk in order to visit it. Buying habits are continually changing and one of the problems with conventional exhibitions, apart from allowing yourself the time away from your workplace to visit, is that you don't always get to talk to the right technical expert on a product as they may be busy or you have limited time at the show.

Our solution was to film each of Brkert's technical experts explaining the features, benefits and applications for each of the main product ranges displayed on the stand. Visitors to the virtual stand can watch a 3D guided tour of the stand and then click on the areas of interest. Each subject or product range is then described in person by the expert in a short movie.

Visitors can download a wide range of product literature from the site as well as making direct enquiries for more information. Anyone who registers will also be sent exclusive show promotional goodies. Please visit anytime at www.burkertve.co.uk

Discounts for Developers

Following significant increase in demand for PROFIBUS products due to its overwhelming success with over 30 million nodes now installed worldwide, the The PROFIBUS Competence Centre at MMU has introduced a one-day course for product manufacturers and engineering companies that want to jump on the bandwagon and develop PROFIBUS products. This one-day course provides an overview of the technology plus details of the communication protocol, tools and methods to get you started correctly on development of your own PROFIBUS products.

Scheduled for 20th October, the first of these courses will be presented in collaboration with ProfiChip, a leading provider of semiconductor solutions for industrial control and communication. To help them get started with their projects, ProfiChip offers course attendees a special discount of 10% off their evaluation kits and 30% off their firmware.

MMU plans to offer more of these courses in conjunction with other PROFIBUS interface specialists and development tool suppliers.
