PROFIBUS Training Opportunities in the UK
PROFIBUS Conference in action

As Chairman of The PROFIBUS Group, the UK's branch of the international PI organisation, I have the great privilege to work with a number of highly professional organisations that have helped to build the reputation of, and market for, PROFIBUS and PROFINET. An essential element of this success has been the meticulous attention to quality of training offered. This has been achieved for the most part by diligent application of an extensive accreditation process that has led to the creation and approval of a number of thoroughly vetted and approved PICCs (PI Competence Centres) and PITCs (PI Training Centres).

The courses offered and the value of their accreditations are now recognised globally as the mark of quality and excellence in PROFIBUS engineering and installation.

If you'd like to be kept up to date with news of our annual Conference and the many seminars, training courses, on-site training and certification opportunities on offer from the PROFIBUS Group in conjunction the highly acclaimed PI Competence Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University, then this newsletter is for you.

The complete schedule of training opportunities and Faxback registration form can be downloaded from our website Download Registration Form.

Certified PROFIBUS Installer & Engineer Courses,  7 - 11 September 2009

MMU LogoThere are a few places available on the above course at The PROFIBUS International Competence Centre at MMU.

The Certified PROFIBUS Installer (CPIC) is an essential course for electrical engineers and technicians needing to upgrade their skills to include fieldbus installation. This one-day, hands-on course teaches the design, installation and testing of complete PROFIBUS networks including DP, PA and optical fibre technology. Covering bus layout and termination, grounding rules and practices, the course will teach delegates how to avoid common, but potentially expensive, installation problems.

CPIC is a pre-requisite for taking the Certified PROFIBUS Engineer course (CPEC) which is for engineers wishing to build their careers around PROFIBUS in either industrial or process automation, companies wanting to benchmark their technical staff or consultants seeking a recognised professional qualification in industrial and process networking can now train for an internationally-recognised qualification as a Certified PROFIBUS Engineer.

Greetings!

Welcome to this, the first of our new format newsletters. You have for some time now been receiving from me email updates about the activities of the PROFIBUS organisation on the understanding that you have subscribed to our list. If you no longer wish to receive these reminders, then there is a very simple Opt-out facility at the bottom of this letter.

If you would like to remain or our main distribution list to find out more about the technology and our activities, or indeed join other of our planned more subject specific lists, then please use the Confirm link above before reading on.

We look forward to being of service.

Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS & PROFINET in Factory Automation - be among the first to claim your free place!

This seminar addresses the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and advanced engineering applications. Covering the use of PROFIBUS and PROFINET in key application areas such as packaging, printing, electrical and electronics assembly, robotics, automotive engineering, drives, mechanical handling and logistics, control systems and energy management, it focuses on the practical aspects of using PROFIBUS and PROFINET in factory automation applications from system design and safety considerations through to maintenance and fault-finding. Supported by live demonstrations of actual tools used in configuration and maintenance, the programme will be of great value to Designers, Production Engineers and System Engineers involved in design, operation and maintenance of modern automated factories and machinery.

Standardised in IEC 61158, PROFIBUS and PROFINET provide state of the art digital communications which address all the needs of the manufacturing and materials handling industries, significantly lowering capital expenditure on installation, commissioning and maintenance. These technologies offer unprecedented, integration of automation, control, monitoring and safety protection systems by using standardised and widely supported communications and networking solutions.

Kindly hosted by Siemens A&D at their Manchester office on 27th October, the seminar is ably presented by fieldbus specialists Andy Verwer of the PROFIBUS Competence Centre at MMU, Alan Bollard of Westermo, Derek Lane of WAGO, Mark Freeman and Peter Brown of Siemens Automation & Drives. Attendance is free of charge to pre-registered delegates from the User community, i.e. companies that own, operate, design, build or maintain automated plant.

Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS in Process seminar comes to Scotland

This free of charge seminar to be held at the Hilton Strathclyde Hotel on October 29th addresses the key practical issues arising from the use of digital fieldbus communications technologies in process and hybrid industries. Covering the use of PROFIBUS PA in key application areas such as Pulp & Paper, Chemical, Utilities, Pharmaceutical, Oil & Gas today, it focuses on the practical aspects of using PROFIBUS in process industry applications from system design and hazardous area considerations through to maintenance and fault-finding. Supported by live demonstrations of actual tools used in calibration and maintenance, the programme will be of great value to Instrument Technicians/Engineers, C&I Engineers and System Engineers involved in design, operation and maintenance of modern process plant.

Standardised in IEC 61158, PROFIBUS PA is a state of the art digital fieldbus designed specifically to address the needs of the process industries. It replaces or works in conjunction with conventional 4..20mA technology, significantly lowering capital expenditure on installation and offering unprecedented, centralised access to instrumentation and field device information. Many additional practical benefits are derived from its use especially in hazardous areas.

The seminar is ably presented by fieldbus specialists Andy Verwer of the PROFIBUS Competence Centre at MMU, Gareth Johnson and Ian Stevens of ABB, Mark Cargill of MWH Consulting, Tony Grassby and Andy Smith of Endress + Hauser, Steve Dickinson of Pepperl+Fuchs and Mark McCormick of Siemens. Attendance is free of charge to pre-registered delegates from the User community, i.e. companies that own, operate, design, build or maintain process plant.

Certified AS-i Engineer course

The team at the PROFIBUS International Competence Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University really do excel at supporting PROFIBUS and related technologies. For example, with the aid of the UK AS-i Users Group they have developed a manufacturer-Independent Certified Course on Actuator Sensor Interface Technology (AS-i), which is often used in conjunction with PROFIBUS. This is a two-day course that teaches the theory and latest practice of the Actuator Sensor Interface. The next is on 15/16 September 2009.

Using a hands-on, practical approach, students will learn how to use AS-i intelligent sensors, actuators and remote I/O in the most efficient and effective way and see how to integrate AS-i into higher fieldbus systems. They will build, configure and exercise their own AS-interface system from scratch. The course covers the latest V3.0 specification and techniques for interfacing AS-i networks to higher fieldbus networks like PROFIBUS and Industrial Ethernet.

The course also includes an overview of the AS-i "safety at work" profile. Successful graduates will receive a "Certified AS-i Engineer" certificate.
