Golda Och Academy Remembers Ilan Ramon |
On Wednesday, February 1, as part of our school's commemoration of the ninth anniversary of the disintegration of Space Shuttle Columbia and the death of Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon, fifth and sixth graders recreated the Chemical Garden experiment performed by Ramon in space during the shuttle mission.
We were honored to be joined by Gil Lainer, Consul for Public Affairs at the Consulate General of Israel in New York, and Daphna Yizrael, Youth Shlicha in partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel, Legow Family Israel Program Center, who are interested in bringing this program to other schools nationwide.

"Biggest Loser" Helps Kick Off Jump Rope for Heart
Jay Jacobs, a finalist from the Biggest Loser television series, joined our Lower School students on February 1, to kick off our "Jump Rope for Heart" campaign, benefiting the American Heart Association.
Mr. Jacobs lives across the street from our Lower School campus and became interested in our school's physical education program. "Today once again, I was so inspired seeing kids running and running that I just had to walk across the street to find out who was doing such an amazing job motivating them, and I met Josh (Breitman)," Mr. Jacobs wrote on our school's Facebook page earlier this year. "Kudo's to Josh, the kids, the facility, the teachers and the parents for truly creating not only a great learning environment, but a healthy one as well!"
Marci Robinson, Youth Market Regional Director for the American Heart Association and a former GOA parent, once again introduced the program. Mr. Jacobs gave an inspirational talk about leading a heart healthy lifestyle. During the month of February the children will be practicing jump rope skills and will gain an appreciation for heart health. Jump Rope For Heart is a national fundraising program that promotes physical activity, heart healthy living, and community service to children.

An Amazing Year for our GOA Female Athletes!
Two GOA female athletes have certainly made their mark at Golda Och Academy!
On Thursday, January 13th, Junior Gloria Rothenberg scored her 1000th point in basketball, becoming the first female in the history of the school to reach this milestone! During the January 13 game against Newark's Central High School, the game was stopped at the beginning of the second quarter so she could be recognized for her achievement. In addition, on January 31 Gloria was listed by the Star Ledger as the state's leading female scorer! To read more about Gloria's achievement, click here. For the Star Ledger article, click here.

Ninth grader Jessica Antiles also made GOA history on January 29, when she won her two events at the Essex County Swimming Championships. All Essex County schools competed in this event at Seton Hall University. Jessica placed first in the 200 IM (Individual Medley) with a time of 2:06.76 and in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.83. Jessica is the first GOA student to win an event in this annual championship meet!

Michael Och Visits GOA
Our Upper School students were honored to have Michael Och visit us on January 19 in com memoration of the yarzheit of his wife, Golda Och. After attending tefillah with our students, Mr. Och reminded the students that as they journey beyond Golda Och Academy, they should always remember their Jewish heritage and should always have a siddur and Tanach on their bookshelves.
Thank you Mr. Och for sharing this day with our students. |
