June 2012

Greetings! Bruce Arbit photo

Anyone interested in entrepreneurship and new forms of  social enterprises should read (or listen to as I did) Steve Jobs' biography by Walter Isaacson. True, Jobs was not a proponent of philanthropy or nonprofits but there is a lot to learn about his vision for and execution of Apple during a thirty-plus year period of transformative change in the technology sector.

While no one can predict the future, it doesn't take a visionary to see that many industries are in a period of tremendous flux, including philanthropy and social investing.

That is why I am pleased to offer a few resources to help you navigate and position your enterprise for success and impact.

Check out the Center for Excellence in Leadership, Governance and Philanthropy at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  Its unique focus is on emerging high performance leaders in the nonprofit sector.  I am honored to serve on the Advisory Board of this new Center.

While you're there, check out the June 28th event which may be of particular interest to you:  A Nonprofit Leadership Forum moderated by Brenda Blackman of My9News.  Early registration is strong and there is limited seating, so please register ASAP.

You also may be interested in a report from Arabella Advisors, Generating Impact and Returns. I'm thrilled to see my client Contact Fund referenced for their work transforming a former industrial site into a green development with affordable housing.

And if you are looking for some summer reading, I highly recommend Invisible Capital, a provocative commentary about how unseen forces shape entrepreneurial opportunity.

Finally, I am pleased to announce the Community Investing Network of New Jersey. It's a new Meetup group we've established for those interested in learning about investment opportunities in local New Jersey communities which make money and have an impact. Overtime we may expand to other geographic areas, so stay tuned.

Beyond Jobs' ability to see - and in many cases - create the future, his biography also reveals the source of inspiration that motivated him all of those years. Interestingly enough, it wasn't profit -- or even his perfectionist obsession in creating aesthetically pleasing, functional products. In fact Jobs' primary motivation was the same that inspires many of us, especially in our philanthropic pursuits - the opportunity to contribute and give back - in appreciation for all that we have received from so many who came before us.

If you are pursuing a growth strategy that requires access to/leveraging of capital, please  contact us. Meanwhile, all best wishes for a wonderful and relaxing summer.

Sincerely,
