Greetings!
Thank you for your continued support of the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce. Please see below for news and information about the Chamber and its members... |
Some of What's Happening in Sierra Madre
Saturday Night at Bean Town from 7 to 10pm, you can catch a performance by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ron Ellington Shy (yes, he is from THAT Ellington famil, he's the Duke's nephew). Mr. Shy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a former member of such legendary groups as "The Coasters," "The Drifters, and "Don & Dewey."
This Sunday, August 1st, will be a big day in Sierra Madre. Rotary Club is gearing up for the return of Harry Shahoian as Elvis during that evening's Concert in the Park. Harry is a hometown boy who once was a singing waiter at what was then Restaurant Lozano. The Concert starts at 6pm, but the In-n-Out truck will be on hand from 4:45 to 6:45 so you can have a bite to eat before everyone gets "All Shook Up." Thanks to Rotary for sponsoring this annual musical highlight of the summer.
Congratulations to Creative Arts Group, which is celebrating 50 years in existence.
Sierra Madre Playhouse presents Fairy Tale Theater...All shows are "Participation" plays. Children in the audience take an active part from their seats, wearing costumes, talking to the characters, and meeting all the costumed characters for autographs after the show. Some children may be invited on stage to play roles in the scenes. Saturday showings all summer long. 11am and 2pm. This week.. Treasure Island. For more info and to purchase tickets please visit Sierra Madre Playhouse. Ticket Prices are $18 for adults and $12 for children under 12 years.
Wednesday, August 4th, the Chamber of Commerce will host a special breakfast Business Education Mixer at the Hart House in Memorial Park from 7:30am to 9am. Donna Cayson, a form SMPD sergeant and a graduate of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, Naval Postgraduate School will be the guest speaker. The title of her presentation is "Preparing Your Business to Survive an Emergency." Ms. Cayson is currently employed by the Department of Homeland Security; FEMA, National Preparedness Directorate. She is head of the Sierra Madre Individual Preparedness Project, an 8-month pilot program from which FEMA will create a template to prepare other communities nationwide for emergencies. Cost of the mixer, $7/Chamber members and $15/non-members, includes breakfast. There will also be door prizes.
The General Plan Steering Committee is looking for Sierra Madre residents to volunteer to assist it with its outreach program. This is all trying to be structured in a way that you will not be subject to Brown Act restrictions, you'll be able to just volunteer. If you are interested, attend this Tuesday's meeting of the GPSC at City Hall (which IS subject to Brown Act) at 6pm.
Charcuterie will be the setting for the Chamber's August After Hours Networking Mixer from 5:30 to 7pm on Tuesday, August 17th. Stop by and meet your neighbor, bring business cards (including one for the door prize drawings), and enjoy some great food. Your $7 or $15 entry (members/non-members) will also get you a punch card you can use to partake of the wine-tasting that will be going on.
The Sierra Madre Individual Preparedness Project is planning an event to take place on Sept. 11th in Memorial Park, with demonstrations on how to be prepared for an emergency. The same day in Kersting Court, A Taste of Sierra Madre will take place, featuring the results of student art and essay contests, live music, tours of local kitchens, and samples of food from local restaurants. We'll give you more details as the events draw nearer.
Coming in September: Business Education Mixer will be an interactive Facebook for business demonstration, and wait till you hear wear our networking mixer is... |

L.A.'s Largest Mixer a Big Hit
Approximately 2,500 folks stopped by the Shrine Auditorium for L.A.'s Largest Mixer last week, and many of them stopped by the Sierra Madre Chamber's booth and learned about the town, it's events and its businesses. Thanks to Matt Krantz and his wife Kathleen who came by to help staff the booth and answer questions for all the folks who stopped by. Here's a picture of the newlyweds in the Chamber booth:
