A Few Words from Chamber Member Sierra Madre Environmental Action Committee (SMEAC)

We found the following items of interest in the SMEAC newsletter and thought we'd share them with you...

Green Advisory Committee
The City has announced formation of a Green Advisory Committee
(GAC), and is seeking volunteers from which to appoint its members.
Quoting from the City's description, "The GAC will be a five-member
committee, appointed by the City Council. The GAC may be comprised of residents who arc professionals in the field of environmental conservation, environmental sustainability, design
professionals, or individuals who have a desire to explore 'green'
programs and practices that apply to future City development.
The GAC will meet on a regular basis and will be asked to provide
staff with recommendations and direction to further the City's efforts
on --- energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, clean energy,
sustainability, including monitoring compliance with State and regional
statutes .... " Meetings will be monthly or as needed. For an pplication, stop by City Hall or visit the City's web site. For more information, call Danny Castro, Development Services Director, at 355-7135.
This appears to be an opportunity to obtain a clear and comprehensive idea of the City's current and evolving environmental
policies as well as a means of providing input to guide in their
formulation. Give it your consideration.

Global Warming Legislation
by Albert Metzger
On June 26th, by an uncomfortably close vote of 219-212, the House passed a landmark bill titled "The American Clean Energy and Security Act," a bill designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At a length of 1200 pages, one wonders about the complexities, hidden pitfalls, contradictions, special exemptions etc. which may lie tucked away in its massive expanse. Is "Security" included in the title as a selling point or is it necessary to put our excess carbon dioxide under lock and key? As reported by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the primary goal of the bill is to reduce emissions 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, and by an impressive (if not impractical) 83% by 2050. It requires electric utilities to supply 20% of their electricity demand through renewable energy sources and increased energy efficiency by 2020, mandates new energy-saving standards for buildings, appliances, and industrial processes, and contains billions in investments to facilitate clean energy technology.
Many environmentalists have expressed disappointment at the compromises applied to the bill as originally introduced in order to secure passage. The other school of thought points to the significance of making a real start after years of inaction. President Obama has expressed support for the bill. Senate leaders are hopeful of receiving their version of the bill from committee before their August recess, with Senate passage and House-Senate reconciliation steps undefined. If delayed, we predict that the approaching International Conference on Global Warming in December will become an important consideration. Now, how many people do you suppose have read all 1200 pages?
Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce
Weekly Update - This week's Coffee with the Chamber is cancelled because both Matt and Bill have other commitments.  But please join us next week, between 7 and 9am at the Chamber office at 37 Auburn, Ste. 1.
Greetings!

Thanks to those who have helped with Friday Night Live, but we could still use some help staffing the Chamber booths.  Do you have a couple hours you can help out?  We need help from 6:30 - 9pm at the booth, and we could also use help for set up and tear down.  Call the Chamber office, or e-mail us if you are available for part or all of that time.  Thanks in advance...
Dickens Village Committee to Meet

Dickens Village LogoIt's that time of year again (actually it's a little after that time of year).  We need to get Dickens Village planned and organized, and we need your help to do it.  Last year we received a lot of positive feedback about Dickens Village.  One person even had the audacity to suggest that if properly nurtured, Dickens Village could become the Chamber's signature event, and outshine even the Wistaria Festival.  Can you imagine?

Are you a nurturer?  We need people to sit on the Dickens Village committee, and help make it an even greater success than last year's event.  We'll be holding a meeting at Memorial Park (by the pergola) next Thursday, Aug. 13th at 7pm.  Bring your ideas, and your enthusiasm.

Dickens Village this year is slated for 3 - 8pm, Saturday, Nov. 28th.

"Killing for a Part"
You, yes, you can have a chance to try out for the new play "Hate Mail," and can read for a part opposite the beautiful and glamorous Constance Bellows, star of the daytime drama "As the Soap Suds." There will be other hopefuls vying for roles in this major production, some well-trained, some just drop-dead gorgeous. Speaking of dropping dead, the atmosphere surrounding the auditions is so competitive and tense, that there's the possibility of something drastic happening. There's also the writer, who doesn't want his precious script corrupted by show-business hacks. There's also the director, concerned with maintaining control of the project.  It's just a show. No one could be driven to violence over it, could they? Is imminent Death lurking nearby?
"Killing for a Part" is an interactive murder mystery, presented for Sierra Madre Playhouse by Karen Young  One performance only, Sunday, August 30th at 2:30pm
For reservations by phone, call 626-355-4318, or click here to order online.

"An Evening with Barry Schwam: A Man and his Theramin"
Actor, writer, and musician Barry Schwam will be performing a variety of his original songs and humorous material on Autoharp, harmonica, Kazoo, Jaws Harp, and Theremin.   The Theremin is the world's only musical instrument played without touching it. If you have never seen one played, that alone is worth the price of admission.  Click Here to see the Theremin in action. Along with his original folk style songs on Autoharp, Barry will do a few of his famous "poems" and some of the quirky surprises that this multi-faceted entertainer is known for. Very often, percussionist Sid "Sticks" Javet has been known to "drop in" on Barry's shows to add a little bounce and comedy. It will be an evening of fun, fun, and more fun, for all ages. Some audience participation is bound to occur, but no watermelons will be tossed, so feel free to leave your umbrellas at home.

Sunday, August 30 at 7:30 pm, All Seats: $12.  For reservations by phone, call 626-355-4318, or, click here to order online.

The Sierra Madre Farmer's Market has extended its hours till 8pm, allowing shoppers to come by in the cooler evening hours during the dog days of summer.  In addition, Tanja Castle of Scholastic Gardens (which manages the market) tells me that they are in discussions with several new vendors and hope to have new items become available in the next few weeks.  Ms. Castle added that they are also expecting to again have live music each week.  As extra incentive, you might also want to stop by the Chamber booth at Friday Night Live, where you can pick up coupons good for $1 off your minimum $5 purchase at the Farmer's Market (one coupon per vendor, please)
