Emergency Radio Station To Be Explained at Kiwanis Meeting
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club will present a program explaining the details of a proposed "Emergency AM" Radio Station that may soon serve our city. Gary Hood of the Sierra Madre Fire Safe Council will explain the purpose of the station, its coverage, and how it would be used to inform area residents during both emergency and non-emergency times. This AM broadcasting station would be connected directly to the Sierra Madre Emergency Operations Center, for dissemination of public safety information in the event of an earthquake, fire, flood, or similar disaster. In non-emergency times, the station would also be used to promote and publicize non-commercial community events in Sierra Madre.
The meeting will be at noon at the Masonic Temple, 33 E. Sierra Madre Blvd. The public is invited. Lunch will be served. The cost is $11 per person; reservations and exact change are required. For reservations, please contact Harriet Lyle at 355-6786 no later than noon the preceding Monday. | |
Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce Weekly Update - Here's another way to stay updated - join us for "Coffee with the Chamber" each Thursday morning, anytime between 7am and 9am, at the Chamber office (37 N. Auburn, #1). |
Greetings!
We would appreciate your input. Each year, the City honors staff and local volunteers with a dinner called "Sierra Madre Honors." One of the awards is for a local business or organization: "Wistaria Award - In recognition of City/Community partnership, presented to a local business or organization whose major contributions to the City/Community of Sierra Madre have demonstrated a true partnership which assists in and provides services, programs or enhances the general welfare of the community as a whole." A second award, the George Maurer Lifetime Service Award is presented to "a person/entity that most strongly represents a commitment to serving and volunteering, which is the true spirit of Sierra Madre." Since the Wistaria award is the one award that is designed to be given to a business or organization, it seems appropriate that the Chamber submit a nomination. And since the lifetime award is named for a current Chamber Board member, we thought it might be good to submit a nominee for that award as well, particularly if the nominee had/has a business in town.
Who do you think the Chamber should nominate? Send your suggestions here: BillCoburn@SierraMadreChamber.com We're a little late getting started on this, we have to turn in our nomination(s) on Monday, so don't delay. Send your suggestions now!
Also - to all Chamber members: We could still use some help staffing the Chamber booths at Friday Night Live. Thanks to Carol Canterbury, Halcyon Koerber, Elizabeth Booth, Ellen Burry, Matt Krantz and George Maurer for their help so far. Do you have a couple hours you can help out? We need help from 6:30 - 9pm at the booth, and we could also use help for set up and tear down. Call the Chamber office, or e-mail us if you are available for part or all of that time. Thanks in advance...

Unlicensed Activity Hurts Your Business
The California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) works to ensure that individuals who are supposed to be licensed - whether as a contractor, or a dentist, or an accountant - are, in fact licensed.
DCA licenses more than 250 professions in over 40 different industries. Licensing establishes minimum education, competency, and ethics standards for California professionals. While some may see these requirements as unnecessary and burdensome, they are overlooking the value. A California license identifies each licensee as an industry professional, establishes uniform industry standards which create a "level playing field" for all licensees, and promotes fair competition in the marketplace.
Those who practice without a California license do so for a variety of reasons. Some practitioners are unfamiliar with licensing requirements. Others have language issues that make the licensing process difficult to understand. Still others lack the education needed to pass the licensing exam or cannot afford the licensing fees. The goal of DCA's Unlicensed Activity Unit is to bring these individuals into voluntary compliance by helping them address whatever barriers prevent them from obtaining a California license.
Other individuals practice without a license because they lack the required skills, cannot pass a background check, or have lost their license for engaging in deceptive or fraudulent business practices. These individuals have no intention of becoming licensed. Avoiding licensing requirements allows them to underbid industry professionals, evade taxes, and avoid detection. These are the individuals who are more likely to cheat and physically harm consumers and who cost licensed professionals money and reputation. DCA's Unlicensed Activity Unit works to find these unlicensed individuals and initiate enforcement action against them.
If you are an unlicensed practitioner who wants to become a California licensed professional, contact DCA. We want to help you become licensed. If you are a licensed professional who wants to protect your business and your good name from unskiiied and dishonest business people:
- Help clients understand that hiring a licensed professional protects them;
- Encourage prospective clients to verify you are licensed in good standing; and
- If your employees or subcontractors need to be licensed, ensure that they are.
If you want to check the status of a California license or report known or suspected unlicensed activity, contact DCA. 1-800-STOP~ULA (1-877-786-7852) www.lnquireBeforeYouHire.ca.gov |
Household Hazardous and E-Waste Roundup Scheduled for Mid-August Need shelf space that's currently being used by a broken computer monitor you replaced with a fancy flat screen? How about that printer that started leaking ink, causing you to buy a space-saving all-in-one? Time to unload it, too?
The County of L.A., the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, in cooperation with the City of Sierra Madre will hold a Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup in the Mariposa Avenue Parking Lot, just west of Baldwin Ave.
Household items such as paint, paint thinner, batteries, pesticides and herbicides, expired pharmaceuticals, and more, can be safely disposed of at this event.
Business waste will not be accepted, but household electronic waste such as monitors, televisions, CPUs, keyboards, printers and cellular phones will be.
They are not looking for your trash, or white goods such as refrigerators, stoves and washing machines. And there is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.
This is open to all L.A. County residents. And again, hazardous waste and electronic waste from businesses is not going to be accepted.

The second week of Friday Night Live went even better than the first, with nearly 50% more shoppers receiving free tote bags full of goodies for spending $35/retail or $75/restaurant (22, up from 15). The average dollar amount spent of the 19 we tracked was $68. People crowded around Kersting Court to hear Mercy and the Beets performing their pop and soul favorites. Winners of the drawings were James Carlson ($25 Gift Cert to Restaurant Lozano, donated by SanGabrielValleyMenus.com and Doris Miller, who won a 4-pack of tickets to Oak Tree, donated by Santa Anita Park. Dawn Islas won 2 Playhouse tickets and two dinners at Charcuterie, donated by the Playhouse and Charcuterie. New this week was a drawing for a box/bag of produce and other goodies from the Farmer's Market, which was won by Chris Bertrand. Come down and enjoy the live music and take advantage of the shopping specials that our downtown merchants are offering...You could be a winner next week. This week's entertainment consists of jazz and swing music performed by the Gem City Jazz Cats. And rumor has it (not yet confirmed) that the appearance by Timmie Down next week might just turn into a repeat performance by Mercy and the Beets, who wowed the crowd last week. Check the website, we'll update it when we know for sure...

Sierra Madre Farmer's Market Extends Hours
The Sierra Madre Farmer's Market has extended its hours till 8pm, allowing shoppers to come by in the cooler evening hours during the dog days of summer. In addition, Tanja Castle of Scholastic Gardens (which manages the market) tells me that they are in discussions with several new vendors and hope to have new items become available in the next few weeks. Ms. Castle added that they are also expecting to again have live music each week. As extra incentive, you might also want to stop by the Chamber booth at Friday Night Live, where you can pick up coupons good for $1 off your minimum $5 purchase at the Farmer's Market (one coupon per vendor, please) |
