Workman's Comp Costs Likely to Increase - Are You Ready?

This story, originally printed in the San Diego Union-Tribune, was pointed out to us by the folks at CalChamber, and we thought we'd share it with you...
Workers' comp insurance about to jump
Several carriers plan significant rate boosts
By Dean Calbreath

Five years after California reined in skyrocketing workers' compensation insurance rates, employers are facing another round of rate increases, blamed largely on rising medical costs.
Over the past two months, half a dozen insurers have notified the state of their intention to raise their workers' comp rates by 10 percent to 33.9 percent.
In Sacramento today, the Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau, an advisory panel largely composed of insurance representatives, will present its case for lifting a statewide benchmark for insurance rates by 23.7 percent - the biggest jump in 30 years.
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has signaled that he is skeptical of the panel's request, especially since a recent audit showed that between 2003 and 2006 the bureau - which makes recommendations on the benchmark rate twice a year - repeatedly asked for rate increases that were not justified by market conditions.
"We must carefully scrutinize all the data involved in making this decision to ensure that any change in the benchmark is warranted," Poizner said last week."  Read the rest of this article...

Greetings!
Well, we're on our second newsletter, and we hope we have figured a few things out...We will be sending these out on a weekly basis, but don't worry.  We'll still be doing a print newsletter, probably on a monthly basis.  We're looking at some exciting ideas that we hope we'll be able to implement, and if we are able to, you will have the opportunity to benefit greatly...But more on that when we've got it narrowed down.

Meantime, this week's edition invites you to a mixer, welcomes new members, says goodby to a longtime member, offers some information about Workmen's Comp legislation, and talks about a big change that's been made on the Chamber website.  And, since it's summer, we've included a couple re-runs - there are still sponsorship opportunities on Friday Night Live, and oh yes, that time to renew item...

We hope you enjoy this second edition of the newsletter, and encourage you to forward it to your friends and business contacts.  Make sure they know they can use the form in the left column to sign up to receive it directly - you don't  have to be a Chamber member to get this newsletter.

Memorial for Former Chamber President Frank van Dongen This Monday
The Chamber is saddened by the loss of long-time member and former Chamber president Frank van Dongen, who passed away May 14th.  A Memorial Mass will be said on Monday, June 15th, on what would have been Frank's 71st birthday.  The service will be held at 2:30pm at St. Rita's Church, at the corner of Baldwin and Grand View (Sierra Madre).  Following the ceremony will be a reception at the San Marino Gallery at 70 N. Raymond Ave. in Old Town Pasadena.

Frank and his wife Ilona own(ed) Harlequin Gallery, which they opened in the mid 1980s, and which sells, teaches, frames and restores art.

Frank and Ilona were recognized by the Chamber at the Citizen of the Year Dinner in January of 2007 for their 40+ years of Sierra Madre business ownership and service to the community, beginning with Frank's Fresh Fish Market in Kersting Court, one of three market/restaurants he owned and operated prior to going into the art restoration business, following in the footsteps of his great-great uncle, Kees van Dongen, a well known Dutch artist.  Frank was born in Holland in 1938, and moved to California in the late 1960s.  He lived in Arcadia for a while before settling in Sierra Madre, a town he loved dearly.

He also loved his new country.  After the horror of September 11, 2001, this Dutch immigrant decided to put his creative talents to work in an American community unity project in which hundreds got to participate.  He painted a flag scene, on which was written the words: "America will stay strong."  He then made the painting available at numerous community events and schools, allowing people of all ages to sign their names and express a short thought.  The response was overwhelming, with a large portion of the signers'  thoughts mentioning pride in America, and hopes for love and peace; an expression of the community and its desire to react positively in the most negative of situations.  He will be sorely missed.

A brief slideshow of pictures of Frank and Ilona (including a picture of the above referenced community flag has been put on the Chamber website, go to www.SierraMadreChamber.com/vandongenmemorial.

Chamber Website Expanding To Serve You Better  The Chamber website is undergoing many changes in order to better serve the business community and the community at large.  One of the first changes implemented was the addition of a Press page on the site.  On this page, you will find links to three types of press releases, those from the Chamber, those from Chamber members, and those from the City and its various departments and branches.  The Chamber will be happy to publish any press releases you have, AT NO COST TO YOU!  It's included with your membership.  There is, of course, a  caveat.  This page is intended for press releases, not advertising or company newsletters.  Feel free to send us your ads and newsletters, so we know what's going on with you and your business, but please recognize that ads and newsletters will not be posted on the press page.  If  you need help preparing a press release, we can help with that.  E-mail us, or call us at 355-5111, and we'll figure out how to make this new web page work for you.  That's why it's there...have you seen it yet?  It's at www.SierraMadreChamber.com/press.
Friday Night Live Is Coming!!!  The Chamber is resurrecting the popular Friday Night Live event from the summer of 2001, and each Friday from July 17th to August 28th we will have live bands performing in Kersting Court, along with giveaways, prizes and family fun!!  We ask all our member businesses to participate, and stay open late on Friday nights, (till 9:30, or at the very least 9pm).  We are currently selecting and scheduling the bands, and recruiting sponsors.  Sponsor levels are (Friends of FNL ($100), Band Sponsors ($150), and Evening Sponsors ($250).  We'll be doing press and web releases that will thank our sponsors, window flyers, and posters.  We've also started a new web page that will promote and/or link to our sponsors, that will have the band schedule when it's finalized.  Find that online at www.SMFridayNightLive.infoDo you want to sponsor?  Maybe you have a prize or a giveaway that we can include?  Do you have/know a band that would be a good fit?  Just looking for something to do on Friday, and can volunteer to help blow up balloons, etc.?  Call Bill or Tiffany at the Chamber (5111) or e-mail us at info@SierraMadreChamber.com
Is it Time to Renew?
Some of you are a little late sending in your renewal dues, and in this economy, that's easy to understand.  Give us a call and we'll work it out with you.  But if we don't hear from you, you just may find yourself dropped from the member rolls, and neither of us wants that!  When you renew, it's seamless, but new/returning members have to pay an administrative fee and be approved (or re-approved) by the Board.  If your membership lapses, you'll be removed from the Chamber website and print directories, and your member privileges will disappear, such as reduced admission to Chamber mixers, reduced advertising rates in chamber publications and at Chamber events, reduced annual membership dues rates at other area Chambers, and much more.  So send in your dues today, or at least contact us and let us know the status of your payment...
