Joyeux Noël!

Sir Noel Peirce Coward, born December 16, 1899

Ways to Celebrate Coward's 111th Birthday:
  • Farley Broadcast on 91.7 FM. Today at 1:00 PM PST, tune in to KALW radio.  (Re-broadcast tomorrow at 7:00 PM.)

  • Blithe Spirit. Tonight & tomorrow night (closing) at A Noise Within (Brand Boulevard Theatre), Glendale, CA.
  • Brief Encounter, adapted by Emma Rice for Kneehigh Theatre, continuing through December 23rd: the Canadian Premiere at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre in Vancouver, BC.
  • Treat yourself or a friend to The Noel Coward Reader, edited and with commentary by Barry Day.  From this 600-page volume, a tiny quote for the day:

I can remember, I can remember
The months of November and December
Were more significant to me
Than other months could ever be
For they were the months of high romance
When destiny waited on tip-toe,
When every boy actor stood a chance
Of getting into a Christmas show,
Not for me the dubious heaven
Of being some prefect's protege!
Not for me the Second Eleven.
For me, two performances a day.

(from "The Boy Actor")

" I was, I believe, one of the worst boy actors ever inflicted on a paying public ... I was a brazen, odious little prodigy, overpleased with myself and precocious to a degree ... I am certain that, could my adult self have been present ... he would have crept out, at the first coy gurgle, and been mercifully sick outside."

Present Indicative (1937)
