April 16 - 18, 2010

Friday: Stephen Fry hosts A Nol Coward Evening -- two Coward sketches by L.A. Theatre Works, plus Cavalcade

Saturday: a Double Feature from BFI - Brief Encounter and In Which We Serve

Sunday: Bitter Sweet, introduced by Brad Rosenstein, plus Blithe Spirit, starring Rex Harrison

On Friday, L.A. Theatre Works will perform two sketches: Design for Rehearsing, which brings to life the rehearsal process Coward undertook with his friends Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt for the 1933 debut of Design for Living; and a fragment from Coward's last, unfinished work, Age Cannot Wither, begun in 1967, about a reunion of three 60-ish school chums.

For the past 25 years, L.A. Theatre Works has brought award-winning contemporary and classic plays featuring all-star casts to audiences via live performance, public radio, Internet streaming, audio books and other formats.  (On December 15, 2009, you may have tuned in to KALW radio for the broadcast of Theatre Works' recording of Present Laughter, following Alan Farley's annual program celebrating The Master's birthday.)

On Sunday, exhibition guest curator Brad Rosenstein will introduce the rare, newly reassembled footage of Nol Coward's 1929 production of Bitter Sweet at His Majesty's Theatre, London. Brad is Curator of Exhibitions & Programs for the Museum of Performance & Design (MPD) in San Francisco, where he assembled the fragments of the silent film footage of Bitter Sweet and added music tracks for its first showing on August 19, 2009 at the MPD.

As part of a joint celebration with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences exhibition, Star Quality: The World of Noel Coward, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles is proud to present a special six-part series, Noel Coward on Television.

This series presents a choice selection of Coward's televised work
in the United States (as writer, director, actor, singer, and yes, dancer) from 1955 to 1976, including several tributes to Sir Noel.

Three programs air between now and April 18. (Click here for a description of the programs.)

The Paley Center's Rebecca Faez (Director of Administration & External Relations) and Gary Browning (Administrator) welcome visits by Coward Society members and have extended an offer to NCS members: whenever you visit the Center, you may select and view programs in the Paley's audio/video library (in addition to the scheduled set for Nol Coward on Television).

Also, if you organize a group of six or more, Gary will arrange for you to use a special private screening room with a large screen instead of a small monitor.  To set up your visit, contact Gary at [email protected] or by telephone at 310-786-1000.

Admission is free, but a donation of $10.00 is suggested.

The Antaeus Company Awarded Coward Foundation Grant

TYI card

The Nol Coward Foundation has awarded a second year of grant funding for The Young Idea, a project of The Antaeus Company of North Hollywood.  Artistic Associate Cindy Marie Jenkins will produce this year's key event: young actors from the Antaeus Academy (who performed last June in readings of three of Coward's plays) are slated to present a full production at the Deaf West Theatre as part of Antaeus's biennial ClassicsFest (July 6 - August 15, 2010).  Congratulations to Antaeus and many thanks to Alan Brodie and the Coward Foundation for their generosity!

Antaeus's Artistic Director Jeanie Hackett emailed this note: "Antaeus is thrilled to receive the Coward Foundation's support for Phase II of our project:  "The Young Idea."   This means we'll be able to mount a fully-staged workshop production of a lesser-known Coward play as part of ClassicsFest 2010, giving us the opportunity to introduce even more young and talented artists, along with a new generation of audiences, to the joys of the Master."

For more information about Antaeus and ClassicsFest 2010, see their
web site  .
