A.C.T. and Kneehigh TheatrePresent:Brief EncounterBy Noel Coward Sept. 11 - Oct. 04, 2009 Adapted for Stage and Directed by Emma RiceThe British are coming! Direct from sold-out performances all over the U.K., England's acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre transforms Coward's iconic love story into a remarkable fusion of theater, film, and music.
Laura (Hannah Yelland) waves goodbye to Alec (Milo Twomey) after their first meeting. Photos by Steve Tanner. Crafted with whimsical humor, romance, and stunning multimedia effects, Brief Encounter was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best Director and Best Entertainment. In this U.S. Premiere, forbidden passion brews in a 1945 railway
station tearoom when a suburban housewife falls madly in love with a married doctor. Featuring several of
Coward's witty songs, Brief Encounter is "great fun, switching
seamlessly between theater and film while retaining the damp-eyed
nostalgia of the period that leaves you with a warm and sentimental
glow." ( The Times, London.)

For NCS reviews of Kneehigh Theatre's Brief Encounter at the Haymarket in London last year, see the Home Chat Archives (available from the Members Page of the NCS Website). Reviews by John Knowles and Rexton S Bunnett are in the June 2008 and August 2008 issues of Home Chat. A quick quote from John's review: "The mixed media approach seems absolutely right in a building that has
been a theatre and a cinema! The fact is that this work does not need
to make up its mind if it's play, a film, a musical or a burlesque. It
is all of them and it can certainly attract sizeable West End audiences!" back to top
