Greetings!

During last winter's and this recent incredible onslaught of weather,  we saw a lot of unusual damage due to ice dams, excessive rain, snow and the resultant flooding, and damaged roofs, burst pipes and seeping water. In the process, we gained new insight about insurance companies and damage claims.
How to handle weather related damage to your home,
or how to manage your insurance claim

With the winter season not that far away, we'd like to share some information that may prove very useful in the months ahead:

1.      At the first sign of damage contact your insurance company by phone and email. Your email establishes a date of your first contact and will record your report should there be any question or argument as to when you reported yourTree on house damage.

2.      If you have ongoing damage (such as running water), get immediate permission to hire a restoration /remediation company to address or stop the cause of the damage so that it doesn't get any worse. This might involve lifting rugs, opening walls or moving furniture away from the damaged area.

If the cost to repair the damage is more than $15,000, we recommend you hire a public insurance adjuster to prepare a written estimate for damage repair. They can be found by Googling them on the Internet, but be sure you get a "public" adjuster, who works for you, not an "independent" adjuster, who works for insurance companies. They typically charge 10% of the estimate as their fee, and that 10% is well worth it. They will act on your behalf, and meet with your insurance company to get the highest claim awarded to you.

3.      Get a proposal from your contractor as soon as possible, because it can take months for the insurance company to approve repairs and issue the funds. At SWS Builders, we are still  doing damage repair for weather damage caused Insurance adjusterlast winter.

If the damage repair report you receive from the insurance company seems low, advise them that you won't accept their estimate. Request another adjuster to look at the damage and prepare a second report.  Don't be bashful about speaking up. The insurance company's focus is to make money, and when they have to pay claims, they try to pay as little as possible. You've paid into your insurance. Stand up for your right to be remunerated.

4.      We have worked with the following insurance companies and have found their estimates to be realistic with regard to damage claims:

a.      Chubb

b.      Atlantic Mutual

c.       Amica
