March 2010 newsletter

Hello

There are lots of new things to tell you about this month, as new stock arrives in preparation for our summer catalogue.   The pretty floral covered picnic baskets that were in our Mother's Day email are due to feature in three magazines so far - we only made the first one a few weeks ago!   New in too are classic enamel bowls for the kitchen and bathroom and delicious Savon de Marseilles - the perfect partner for our new enamel Soaps bowl.

Traditional and practical, our new woollen Button Tea Cosies are hand-knitted locally. They are made from 100% Scottish wool from the New Lanark Mills here in Scotland.  In a pretty moss stitch, this wonderful wool will keep your tea piping hot!

There's a new recipe for you too this month - Cobblers!   A delicious alternative to the ubiquitous crumble, you'll find the recipe at the bottom of the newsletter.

On the home front, we're beginning to surface from winter.  I've just spent a horrid afternoon cutting down roses that were stripped by starving rabbits during the deep freeze - probably won't make it but we'll give them a month or so to see if new shoots appear.  Not only did the little blighters strip the established roses but they also got 6 new roses that were planted in November.  I could cry.

Finally, in celebration of the fact that we are through that incredibly hard winter, I'm going to offer you, as a newsletter subscriber, a Spring In Your Step 10% off all orders until the end of March.  Just quote SIYS at checkout.

Have a great March - sun at last!

An odd little mixture for this month's Spotify play list!
spotify logoNo rhyme or reason for this month's songs - just things I've heard and thought I'd like to hear again ... and again ... and again ....and if you're a romantic at heart and have never heard 'Darling Be Home Soon', I strongly suggest a listen!

Boogie Shoes - KC & The Sunshine Band
Shame, Shame, Shame - Shirley & Company
The Only Living Boy in New York - Simon & Garfunkel
Second Hand News - Fleetwood Mac
Cracklin' Rosie - Neil Diamond
Darling Be Home Soon - The Lovin' Spoonful

That really is an odd mixture!

This month the recipe is Cobblers!
CobblerAs I said above, the cobbler is a great discovery as it will happily sit on top of any fruit that you might otherwise put a crumble on - so really good for apple, plum, peach, rhubarb.  A perfect Sunday lunch pudding.

Ingredients:
2 to 2.5 lbs stewed fruit
4oz unsalted butter
8oz plain flour
2 rounded tspns baking powder
3 rounded tblspns caster sugar
6fl oz double cream

Rub the butter into the flour and baking powder.  When it looks like breadcrumbs, stir in 2 tablespoons caster sugar and the double cream, using a fork to keep the mixture light.   Put the stewed fruit into a 10" ovenproof dish (our Digoin dishes are perfect!)   Form the dough into patties.  They can be quite rough - it will only add to the charm of the finished pudding - but they need to be no more than 1 inch thick.  Place them on top of the fruit, which will show through in patches.   Sprinkle on the remaining sugar.

Bake in 200C oven for 40-50 minutes until the crust has turned a pale golden colour and the fruit is bubbling.  Serve hot with lashings of double cream!
Chicken update!
CHickens Mar 10You may remember that last November we became the proud owners of six ex-battery chickens who gained quite a following with our customers!  I promised to give you intermittent updates so ...

Sadly one of our girls (Lavender) didn't make it through the very hard winter, but the other five are thriving, as you can see.  We have made them a big run which allows them access to a big field as well and every day they are let out into the run where they scrape and scavenge happily.  Much to our amusement they have taken to using a hollow tree stump as a nesting box and there is at least one egg in there each day!  We had a few moments this week when Lady Marmalade decided to go walkabout on consecutive days.  She disappeared entirely and spent the first night out in the open (brave/silly chicken), was found the next day and then did it again!   Happily back in the fold now.   A fox has been spotted in the fields, so we have decided to wire the girls into their run for the time being.   We're getting a good few delicious eggs every day, so thumbs up so far for the whole experience!
