Did you know?

In the old days, the New Year started with a custom called 'first footing', which was suppose to bring good luck to people for the coming year. As soon as midnight had passed and January 1st had started, people used to wait behind their doors for a dark haired person to arrive. The visitor carried a piece of coal, some bread, some money and some greenery. These were all for good luck - the coal to make sure that the house would always be warm, the bread to make sure everyone in the house would have enough food to eat, money so that they would have enough money, and the greenery to make sure that they had a long life.

The visitor would then take a pan of dust or ashes out of the house with him, thus signifying the departure of the old year.

Happy New Year!

Allison and I are just back from two weeks in Hawaii and this weather is a bit of a shock to the system.  We are all rested up and ready to go for 2010.  Can you believe its 2010 already?  Weren't we all supposed to driving space cars by 2010?

Its hard to believe but after all the planning and construction the 2010 Winter Olympics are only 23 days away.  Allison and I plan to attend the opening ceremonies and the GS slalom at Whistler one weekend so we are very excited.  Make sure you get out and support this amazing event and show the world that we live in the best city in the world!
GO CANADA GO!

As expected the bank of Canada kept their overnight lending rate at .25% so no changes in prime are expected until the fall if at all.  The Bank of Canada renewed its commitment to keep rates where they are to June and are now hinting that they may keep the rates low even longer.  This is great news for all you on variable rates as it will extend your savings with your current low rates.

Fixed rates are still low around 3.89% for five years and there are indicators that they may go even lower.  December was a record month for home sales which was driven by strong demand and limited supply.  Ignore any discussion about a housing bubble as this is definitely not a bubble.

If you are looking to sell now is a great time due to limited supply.  If you are planning on buying today's rates make it very attractive and supply will pick up by late February.

Congratulations to Amber Weland who was the lucky winner of the two tickets to the closing ceremonies for referring one of her client to me in early 2009. (see picture below)
