AFT is honored to be Hosting an Artist Reception for

Mr. Jan Shield, Professor Emeritus at Pacific University

Date: Wednesday September 5th

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Place: A Framer's Touch

Meet the artist and enjoy a
sample of local wine and Hors d'oeuvres

This showing will include a series of new ink drawings related to bird houses and nests..These works along with other smaller regional paintings and some that relate to an interest Shield has been working on in context to his larger collaborative environmental art installations and exhibits titled "Nest Project".

He says he became interested in this subject after finding a number of nests being blown out of their grand fir trees, and has found them so fascinating that he has been taking time from his more abstract work and regional painting to investigate the intricacies and expressive potential as well as the concept of the fragile balance that all living creatures including birds and humans exist within.

Jan and his wife live on a beautiful forest property called "Dancing Trees" looking out over the Yamhill Pinot Noir valley from Chahalem Mountain below Bald Peak, and a number of his larger scale works like the one made of over l00 fir and maple branches l8ft around and rising 12 feet in one of their clearings is a pre-runner to some of these current works that provide a more intimate look at various structures people make for birds that Jan likes to mount on the top of each fence post around his pastures.

Other works being shown will be small clay creations and acrylic on canvas and panels relating to the nests that various birds in context to providing shelter.
