Summertime Fun: MFP Teams Up with Princeton's PICS Project!
This summer, MFP has the pleasure of hosting Mariana and Nana, interns from the Princeton Internship in Civil Service Program (PICS). The program provides a valuable opportunity for students to explore potential careers in public service and the non-profit sector and exposes them to advocacy on behalf of the community.
During the ten week internship, Mariana and Nana will coordinate workshops, field trips, guest speakers, educational opportunities and culturally-inspired food events as part of MFP's Cultural Inclusion Project (CIP); the goal being to expose youth to places and activities they have never had the opportunity to experience. The young people are the true beneficiaries, as they explore world cultures and diversity throughout Los Angeles. This programming is sponsored by Paul Haaga, whose dedication and support make the CIP possible.
Here's more about our amazing summer interns:
Mariana Bagneris is a LA Native, who is working on her degree in Psychology at Princeton. She is happy to be back in her hometown of LA with the opportunity to give back to the community where she grew up. Her favorite part of interning at MFP is having the chance to just hang out with the young people, not as clients, but as peers. She recognizes that each young person has a unique life story, along with talents and goals, many of which go unseen when passing by on the street. Mariana is looking forward to sharing experiences with the young people, while helping to reinvigorate their thirst for knowledge.
Nana B. Owusu-Nyantekyi is originally from Ghana, but grew up in England and is enjoying Princeton, where he's exploring an education in either Psychology or Evolutionary Biology. He also serves as a youth mentor on a part-time basis. This summer marks Nana's first trip to LA and he is experiencing so much of what the city has to offer. He recognizes that so many people's perception of Hollywood as a glamorous tourist attraction is far from reality; he notices several parallels between homelessness in Hollywood and the poverty in Ghana. Nana hopes to use this experience to shape his future career in Ghana's non-profit sector. For now, he is enjoying the ability to compare and experience different cultures, while working in MFP's unique environment.
