Word From the Streets
Written in MFP Workshops
Savanna
Often times I wander, stray from what isn't known, return to my soul, work again to reveal what was broken
oh, how placid was that place, maybe I should return there, or maybe I should go somewhere new, what could settle my wandering spirit and finalize the soul cup....

Volunteer of the Month
Pepperdine Law School Students
"Know Your Rights" Workshop
Law students at Pepperdine University first learned about My Friend's Place after meeting Executive Director, Heather Carmichael, during a ride along with social service officers from the Hollywood Business Improvement District (BID). This partnership, sponsored by Public Counsel Law Center has been instrumental in empowering youth to Know Their Rights.
During the ride along, Katherine Bowles, along with several other Pepperdine Advocates for Public Interest Law (APIL) students, got a glimpse of the legal issues facing homeless youth in Hollywood. What started out as an educational excursion for the student organization soon became an opportunity to contribute and apply their expertise.Concerned with protecting the rights of some of the most vulnerable community members, APIL helped organize and train members to give workshop presentations to the youth of MFP. "The need for services is apparent," Bowles shared as colleague Devyn Wills continued, "Seeing it in real life is different than the classroom." After engaging young people in discussions in order to empower sound decision-making, APIL member Tina Segura shared her appreciation for "the chance to defend liberty and foster mutual respect, rather than a fear of authority." My Friend's Place thanks APIL for all of their work to better inform young people, advocate for their needs and equip them with tools for success!
Thank you also to BID Officers Michael Coogle and Michael Ayala for joining in the the effort to build relationships with the young people and ensuring they're aware of their rights.
