Bringing Tradition Back to Youth!
On October 31st, MFP staff got into the Halloween spirit with 70s-inspired costumes. The decade, often associated with transformation and progressive values of peace and love, seemed like the perfect theme. We encouraged youth to enjoy the occasion in a non-threatening setting, with fun and plenty of delicious treats. As we move into the holiday season, we look forward to sharing in the joys and traditions with the young people.

Happy Halloween from My Friend's Place!

HomeWalk 2011
Join MFP and Kobe Bryant!
Every year, the United Way of Greater Los Angeles organizes HomeWalk, a 5K run/walk to end homelessness. Kobe Bryant is the Master of Ceremonies for this year's event on November 19th at Exposition Park in LA. Over the last four years, HomeWalk has mobilized 18,000 walkers to raise support for some of the most vulnerable in our community and to spread the word that homelessness is a solvable problem. My Friend's Place will be there, and we would love for you to join our team!

New MFP Art!
Mike Gallegos, our former peer educator, created this beautiful mural celebrating our partnership with

Word From the Streets
Written by youth in MFP workshops
Unknown only your future
My life is very hectic
My brain is very delicate
All of this information
has got me in questions
Thinking of today
but relying on my past
Maybe this crazy scene
is what makes me
Judgments after judgments,
Rumors after rumors,
This whole crazy universe
is like a tumor,
Growing after another,
a never ending story
Hating wars, heartache
It's what makes part of life boring, Money, sex, stuck up, mean
How can anybody live this as a dream?
The road I was on before was taking me nowhere, which was a bore
Today is today my future is bright
Maybe my crazy life will be all right

Volunteers of the Month
Capital Group has been an amazing supporter of My Friend's Place for years-almost since the time we first opened our doors 23 years ago! Year in, year out, Capital Group and its employees provide Board Leadership, financial support, guest speakers, and volunteers to help with everything from special events and fundraising to our youth employment program. But one of the most special contributions they make happens at Thanksgiving. Every year, Capital Group employees provide a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal to the homeless youth at MFP. You can imagine the excitement of the youth when nearly forty Capital Group employees show up with a delicious feast prepared with great care in their own ovens. Their generosity speaks to a deep compassion and conveys the message to the youth that they are valued and cared for. All of this would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of Kristie Sanchez (pictured below) and MFP Board members, Chuck Freadhoff (pictured below), Dexter Williams and Tom Lloyd. For Capital Group, being part of the holidays at MFP and seeing the impact of a good meal and company is very special.

Thank you, Capital Group, for your commitment to the young people at MFP!
