July 2011                            Volume 3 Issue 7

Dear ,

Heather CarmichaelLast week, we had a release party for a CD of music written, recorded, and produced by youth at My Friend's Place (see photos here).  As I sat among youth, staff and guests listening to the music filled with incredible insight, resilience, and humor, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the privilege of doing the work we do and of having such an amazing community of support.  Thank you for being a part of MFP!

We just started a new fiscal year and it is truly a time of renewal and transition at My Friend's Place.  Last year we served over 1,700 youth - seven percent more than the previous year.  And we have ended the year in a strong financial position, poised for sustainable growth as we work to complete a new strategic plan.

As we move into this exciting phase, we will be joined by new team members including new Director of Development Alexis McLeod and new Office and Facilities Coordinator Justin De Los Santos.  We will also be welcoming new interns: Jacqueline Arnason, Michael Hayden, and Eva Elizabeth Hendrix-Shovlin.  Finally, we are thrilled to announce the addition of four members to our Board of Directors: Jay Faires, Michael Oates Palmer, Scott Walker and Garry Wong.  Their energy will add to our momentum as we launch into the new fiscal year.

Our thanks to outgoing development team Michael Kass and Stuart Brewster, as well as outgoing interns Dave Holmes and Emily Labrecque for their service to the homeless youth of Los Angeles. We wish them well in their new ventures!

And of course thank you so much for your commitment to the homeless youth of Los Angeles.  Your support means so much to the youth we serve!

Warmly,

Heather Carmichael, LCSW

Word From the Streets

Written by youth in workshops at My Friend's Place

For the child who went to sleep without a father in the home last night...
For the mother or grandmother who wept over her child's life lost to the streets...
For the son who became the system in order to survive...
For the daughter who never knew intimacy or love...
For the baby left on a doorstep and no life yet to understand...
Your sorrows are not in vein.
