As part of the SEI, or Social Enterprise Intervention, program at My Friend's Place, youth have been finding ways to harness their creative talents to establish a sustainable, real-world business.  In addition to learning business and computer skills, the youth have been working on creating a calender featuring their own photography which will eventually go on sale.

To celebrate their hard work and the progress of the ongoing project, My Friend's Place recently held a showing of the young people's work.  Youth watched a 15-minute slideshow of fantastic photographs taken around the Hollywood area to a soundtrack of beats laid down by one of their peers, and chowed down on a special snack to mark the occasion.

Thanks to SEI staff Cathy Snuggs, Gina Murdock, and Michael Gallegos for their beautiful work bringing out the creativity of the youth!  Special thanks as well to Professor Kristin Ferguson of USC for making this project possible.

July Volunteers of the Month: Westlake Financial Services
The employees of Westlake Financial Services first served a special meal to the youth at MFP in September of 2009 and decided in January of 2010 to commit to a regular appearance on the fourth Thursday of every month.

Westlake employeesDuring their monthly visit, the volunteers serve the young people a special meal of warm food, fresh from local restaurants.  Many of the young people look forward to and get excited about this special meal because it is a change from the typical microwavable food offered during normal operating hours.  Furthermore, many of the youth appreciate the consistency and dedication of a regularly scheduled group of volunteers that they can get to know.

Many thanks to all the employees at Westlake Financial Services for your ongoing commitment to the homeless youth of Los Angeles.  You make a difference!

Back to School 2010

It's almost back to school time for many of the youth who visit My Friend's Place!  Completing an education is difficult and rewarding for everyone, and even more challenging when factoring in life on the streets.  In order to help alleviate the cost of achieving an education, MFP provides school supplies to youth in need.  We currently need:
  • BackpacksBack to School
  • Bus tokens
  • Composition notebooks
  • Ballpoint pens (black and blue only)
  • Index cards
  • Color markers (broad and thin tipped)
  • Drawing pads
  • AA or AAA batteries
  • Pocket school-year calendars/organizers
Please note, we only need the items listed above!  We cannot take anything else due to limited storage capacity.  For questions or to schedule a donation, please contact Stuart by email or at 323-908-0011 x 116.  Thank you!
