Youth Take AIM at New Workshop
Congratulations to all eight graduates of AIM (Adult Identity Mentoring), a new life-skills workshop facilitated at My Friend's Place throughout December and January!  The workshop, with a curriculum developed at Children's Hospital Los Angeles by Leslie Clark, Arlene Schneir, and Leah Molaiepour, ran eight weeks at MFP as well as at the Jeff Griffith Youth Center and Covenant House Los Angeles.  Each participant in the program set goals for their future, identified challenges to achieving those goals, and created strategies for success.

taking aim graphicThe workshop was extraordinarily successful, as 100% of the youth who enrolled ended up completing it and graduating!  Another round of the workshop is tentatively scheduled for April and youth are already asking about it.

Health Education Manager Nick Taylor coordinated the project at all three sites and co-facilitated the curriculum at MFP with Direct Service Counselor Stephanie Gallegos.  Thanks to them and CHLA for their commitment to assisting and inspiring the homeless youth of Hollywood toward self-sufficiency!

Students Help Youth Map Out Their Lives
As part of a project bringing together members of the arts love in a cemeteryand non-profit communities, My Friend's Place partnered in late 2009 and early 2010 with the Otis MFA Public Practice Program.  MFA students Rae Filsinger and Ella Tetrault worked to chronicle the life experiences of the youth visiting My Friend's Place, literally mapping out their lives on paper.  After 2.5 months, the project was completed and shown as part of an exhibition called "Love in a Cemetery" on January 23 at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica.  Several MFP youth attended the event and had a wonderful time!

The youth who visit My Friend's Place often experience a high degree of impermanence in their lives as crucial relationships and living situations fluctuate constantly.  Understanding those changes and how to foster stability is a crucial part of creating self-sufficiency in their lives.  Special thanks to artists and organizers Andrew Bowers and Suzanne Lacy, as well as Rae and Ella for your service to homeless youth of Hollywood!

Youth Move Into Housing
My Friend's Place was recently overjoyed to be able to assist seven young people in acquiring and preparing for stable housing at the beginning of the year!  This is an enormous milestone in each of the young people's lives and we are so proud of them.

Because of the generous contributions of MFP's in kind donors, each youth had plates, towels, cleaning supplies, and more to welcome them home!

Thank you to everyone who donated!  Your help has already gone a long way toward making each young person's housing feel like "home."
