It's still August, but My Friend's Place is already making plans to propel us through the Fall and into 2010! Keep reading to learn more about our major fundraiser for the year, updates on the youth, and more.

School is back in session!
|
It's back to school time already! Summer has quickly come and gone, and many of the youth who visit My Friend's Place are preparing to begin attending class once again in the fall.
Living on the streets can make going to school and completing homework daunting tasks. But many of the youth who visit MFP know that a strong education is the key to a brighter future. My Friend's Place works with the youth in many ways to encourage attendance and excellence in school, including providing school supplies to alleviate the financial burden of getting an education.
We are currently in need of:
- Backpacks
- Spiral notebooks
- Bus tokens
- Colored markers
- Folders and 1-inch binders
- Ball point pens (blue and black)
- $5 gift cards to Subway or McDonald's
*Please note, we do not currently need pencils, colored pencils, or lined paper.
Please contact Stuart Brewster with any questions or to schedule a drop off of any of the above items. Thank you for your commitment to helping the youth of My Friend's Place achieve greatness!

Cultural Inclusion, Field Trips, and Interns, oh my!
|
This summer, the youth of My Friend's Place have visited Chinatown, Little Tokyo, LACMA, and more in field trips hosted by intern Kelly Sternhagen. With an emphasis on education surrounding cultural inclusion, Kelly says the field trips hope to "expose the youth to everything Los Angeles has to offer that they normally wouldn't have the opportunity to experience." In addition to the field trips, Kelly has also run weekly workshops and served special snacks to the youth - including a "make your own sushi" day! Although Kelly is leaving My Friend's Place to return to her studies at Princeton in the Fall, she says she has learned a lot just by spending time with the youth here. "I've learned more from them and their experiences and my relationship with them than I ever could have expected." On behalf of the youth and staff, My Friend's Place thanks Kelly for her invaluable service and contribution to the community! My Friend's Place would also like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Mary Hartman, Michael Campinelli, and Jay Christian who have each spent a year interning with MFP through the DOOR, JVC, and EUIP programs. Your service to the youth has made a difference! |
A Poolside Party Benefitting My Friend's Place
|
On August 1st, members of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC - LA) Federal Club threw a summer poolside party in honor of this Community Service Summer, with in kind donations benefiting My Friend's Place. Party goers brought clothes, back to school supplies, creative arts materials, and more in support of MFP's Safe Haven and Transformative Education programs, then enjoyed refreshments and a delicious barbecue potluck while relaxing by the pool.
Special thanks to Bryan Keller and co-chairs Lynn Shepodd and Andy Arnold for organizing and hosting this event, advancing HRC's commitment to a future where all our people are equal!
My Friend's Place survives and thrives because of the support of our community. Are you or your organization interested in holding a party to benefit MFP? Contact Stuart Brewster to find out how!

MFP By the Numbers
|
In June, My Friend's Place experienced a 30% jump in visitors over the same month last year - as well as a 25% jump in young people visiting us for the first time.
As the economic crisis continues, the most vulnerable members of our community are affected disproportionately. Help My Friend's Place meet the rising need: On behalf of the youth who visit MFP, thank you for all that you do!
