Back to School, Back to Service

This week, PDK/Gallup released the latest results of its study of Americans' attitudes toward public education. Titled "A Nation Divided," the report exposes deep rifts over hot-button issues like teacher evaluation and school vouchers. As we start the school year divided, YSA offers a remedy that teachers, parents, and especially students can all agree on: service-learning. As we look for ways to bolster student achievement and workforce readiness, service-learning is a strategy that we know works.

YSA's programs resound with success stories:

This school year, thousands of students across the country will embark upon YSA's Semester of Service, a 12 to 14 week program of service-learning. YSA offers free teacher guides and resources to assist in planning. If you're interested in bringing the success of YSA's Semester of Service program into your classroom, and learning more about upcoming in-person & online training opportunities and new YSA resources, sign up today at www.YSA.org/semester

Everyday Young Heroes

Kevin Curwick

Osseo, MN

YSA recognizes 17-year-old Kevin Curwick of Osseo, MN as an Everyday Young Hero for taking a stand against cyberbullying by creating the @OsseoNiceThings Twitter account to celebrate gifts and talents of his fellow students.

After noticing that online bullying was becoming an issue at his school, Kevin (who is also captain of the school's football team) decided to do something about it. He created the @OsseoNiceThings Twitter account and used it to say nice things about his fellow students, starting by complimenting students who were being attacked by others online.  Kevin says that since his Twitter page started, the accounts being used to attack his classmates have stopped posting.

Students in nearby school districts have followed Kevin's lead and created pages for their own schools, including @ChannhassenNice, @ChaskaNice, and @Minnetonka Nice. Read more about Kevin and watch a TV news story from KARE 11, the Twin Cities' NBC affiliate.

As teachers and students head back to school, YSA honors Kevin as an Everyday Young Hero and encourages everyone to take a stand against bullying this school year.

To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero.

Song of the Week

Beyonce - "I Was Here" (United Nations World Humanitarian Day Performance)

"I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here
I want to say I lived each day until I died
And know that I meant something in somebody's life
The hearts I have touched will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference, and this world will see
I was here
I lived, I loved
I was here."
