Introducing the National Child Awareness Month Ambassadors
|
|
In honor of September's National Child Awareness Month, YSA and Festival of Children Foundation will engage 51 outstanding teens and young adults from across the nation to serve as Youth Ambassadors, leading high-visibility campaigns to create positive change in the lives of other young people.
The Youth Ambassadors will begin their term of service in September, when they will travel to Washington, D.C., for a leadership training summit and to begin planning their campaigns. The Youth Ambassadors represent a diversity of causes, backgrounds and issue areas, ranging from child homelessness to teen driver safety. Thirty-seven of the 51 Youth Ambassadors have been selected; find out who the Youth Ambassador is from your state!
Following the September training in Washington, D.C., the Youth Ambassadors will return to their home states to execute their campaigns over the course of several months, including a campaign event or service project on Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013.
In celebration of September's National Child Awareness Month, we're asking for your ideas about what you can to do help young people in your community. Share your idea on Twitter with #NCAM, or post to Facebook and tag @youthservice and be entered to win! The person who posts the best idea will win a $100 gift certificate AND a $100 donation in your name to a children's charity of your choice. To be eligible, posts must hashtag #NCAM on Twitter, or tag @youthservice on Facebook. One entry per day through September 7.

ServiceVote 12 for '12: Engaging Youth in the 2012 Elections Special Series
With just under 12 weeks to go until Election Day, YSA begins this special 12-part series leading up to November 6.
The voting age may be 18, but the ServiceVote(ing) age is 5-25. YSA's ServiceVote 2012 campaign calls on all young people to serve their communities during this election season by registering voters, educating voters, engaging candidates, getting out the vote, and raising awareness and advocating for the issues you care about! (And, yes, if you're old enough, voting!)
YSA offers the ServiceVote 12 for '12 - twelve ideas of how young people can serve this election season (and only one of them requires you to be 18!) Get all the ideas, related resources, and let us know how you're getting involved at www.YSA.org/ServiceVote
Each week until Election Day, we'll feature one way young people can get involved during the election, and highlight related programs, resources, and stories.

ServiceVote 12 for '12 #1: Register voters.
No one can vote without being registered to vote. Some states offer same-day registration, but in most places, you have to register at least 30 days before the election.
- Start by making sure your family, friends, and neighbors are registered to vote.
- Spread the word online encouraging your social network to register.
- If you're really into getting people registered, organize a voter registration drive.
Download the ServiceVote "Register" tipsheet and and access more voter registration resources from organizations like Rock the Vote, the League of Women Voters, Nonprofit VOTE, Campus Vote, and Project Vote at www.YSA.org/ServiceVote#1
|
If you're not registered to vote yet, register here!
For Global Youth Service Day 2012, students at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, MD organized a Rock The Vote concert that culminated a week of activities to get students registered and engaged in the election.
Project idea: Student councils or other student groups in many schools celebrate every student's 18th birthday with a birthday card that includes a voter registration form.

Everyday Young Heroes
|
Kevin Li
Fort Washington, PA
YSA recognizes 16-year-old Kevin Li of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, as an Everyday Young Hero for using his talent and passion for music to raise funds for children battling life-threatening illnesses through his organization, Sound of Hope.
Kevin's organization, Sound of Hope, stems from his recital series to benefit the Hope for Henry Foundation. The foundation provides gifts for hospitalized children and hospital performance programs, which mitigates the effects of a terminal disease. Kevin has raised more than $4,000 for technology and entertainment items through his organization while touching many lives along the way. Support continues to grow as Kevin impacts others through his music, especially after involving other musicians to perform with him. Kevin constantly inspires others through his thoughts and actions in all aspects of life, especially since he earned a perfect score on the SATs. For his dedication to alleviate the burden of childhood diseases and his desire to use his talents to improve their lives, we honor Kevin as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

Song of the Week

Garth Brooks - "We Shall Be Free"
This ain't comin' from no prophet Just an ordinary man When I close my eyes I see The way this world shall be When we all walk hand in hand
When the last child cries for a crust of bread When the last man dies for just words that he said When there's shelter over the poorest head We shall be free
When the last thing we notice is the color of skin And the first thing we look for is the beauty within When the skies and the oceans are clean again Then we shall be free..." |
