STEM Fest to Celebrate Service-Learning Super-Teachers, Explore Effective Practices

Next week, 14 amazing YSA teachers will gather at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for "STEM Fest: A Serious Celebration." YSA is bringing these teachers to Washington for a two-day summit to celebrate their achievements in leading their classes in a STEMester of Service, an extended service-learning program in which middle school students learned standards-based science, technology, engineering and/or math curricula through addressing an environmental issue affecting their communities.

STEM Fest culminates in a panel presentation at which teachers will share their success stories with an audience of education, government, and service leaders. Kumar Garg of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, who leads President Obama's "Educate to Innovate" initiative, will speak about the importance of STEM education in building career and workforce readiness skills.

Everyday Young Heroes

Hannah Perryman

Streamwood, IL

YSA recognizes 18-year-old Hannah Perryman from Streamwood, IL, as one of our Everyday Young Heroes.  Hannah, a star pitcher and recent graduate of Elgin High School, serves as a beacon of hope by overcoming her fears and actively making a change in her community.

Hannah has overcome many obstacles in order to change the Illinois Stalking Law and ensure that no one else has to live through her experiences.  When Hannah was in the 5th grade, she was assaulted by a girl living in her neighborhood, which escalated to stalking and death threats. At that time, state laws restricted Hannah from stopping the offender.  After living in fear for four years, Hannah's offender was ultimately arrested and charged with eight felony counts of stalking.  Breathing a sigh of relief, Hannah remained dedicated to change the state law by working with her legislators at the age of 15.  Her bill was signed into law in August of 2010.  Hannah continues to raise awareness by speaking at several conferences across the state, and sharing her story with educators and law enforcement.

We honor Hannah Perryman as an Everyday Young Hero for her effort to provide a more secure future for stalking victims while maintaining excellence on the mound.

To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero.

Song of the Week

Jon Bon Jovi - "It's My Life"

"
This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
...
This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks."
