Everyday Young Heroes
|
Dominic Oetinger
Barrington, IL
YSA recognizes ten-year-old Dominic Oetinger from Barrington, Illinois, as one of our Everyday Young Heroes. Dominic is a student at Hough Street Elementary School where he is involved with issues addressing race, ethnicity, gender and equality through his service.
Inspired by a volunteer in India who witnessed the disfigurement of a young burn victim, Dominic led an official US Chess Federated tournament in collaboration with local businesses to raise funds for surgeries. He led 35 volunteers, 100 chess students and 150 parents and community members to help a little girl overcome the challenges of severe poverty in the slums of India, as well as fundraise to sponsor her surgeries. The little girl had three plastic surgeries on her hands and face over the last three years since the project was started. Additionally, Dominic has raised $5,027 this year, which will cover her education for two years. The Hough Street School Chess Tournament has become a source of great pride for the students because they are able to make a life changing difference. Dominic will continue to be involved in supporting this cause as support continues to grow. For his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others through his passion for chess, we honor Dominic Oetinger as an Everyday Young Hero.
To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

Do Schools Challenge Our Students? What Student Surveys Tell Us About the State of Education in the United States
You might think that the nation's teenagers are drowning in schoolwork. But when the Center for American Progress recently examined a federal survey of students in elementary and high schools around the country, they found the opposite: Many students are not being challenged in school, and large percentages of students report that their school work is "too easy." Her lecture examines three principal ideas: 1) That we are wired to help others; 2) That our history and America's story have been shaped by people acting on this empathetic impulse to help others; and 3) That we have more power to drive greater change and help more people than ever before. Kid Rock - "Care"
"Cause I hear screaming on the left Yelling on the right I'm sitting in the middle Trying to live my life 'Cause I can't stop the war Shelter homeless, feed the poor I can't walk on water I can't save your sons and daughters Well, I can't change the world And make things fair The least that I can do The least that I can do The least that I can do is care..."
