Voices for National Service Capitol Hill Day - July 11, 2012 in Washington, DC

As the fiscal year 2013 budget debate heats up, there will be tremendous pressure to cut federal spending. Unfortunately, many Members of Congress still don't recognize the connection between funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the important work CNCS-supported organizations are doing in their state and district. As a result, CNCS will be targeted for cuts.  On July 11th, Voices for National Service will host their annual Capitol Hill Day to help make those critical connections. Through a coordinated day of congressional office visits, they will try to visit every Congressperson and outline what's at stake in their communities if CNCS funds are cut or eliminated. Please join us for the Voices for National Service Capitol Hill Day. Register early to secure your place. Registration will close on June 25th. http://bit.ly/LxhaOv

  • GenerationOn recognized six youth, ages 8-16 as 2012 Hasbro Community Action Heroes.  http://bit.ly/JQMjce
  • A major new study by CIRCLE, Pathways into Leadership: A Study of YouthBuild Graduates, shows that a significant number of YouthBuild graduates go on to become leaders in their careers and communities.  http://bit.ly/MNYn4B
  • A new Knight Foundation report finds that KaBOOM! playground build projects help volunteers and local organizations cultivate the skills, confidence and inspiration to get more involved in their communities. KaBOOM!: Playgrounds that Build Communities provides lessons for groups seeking to engage volunteers in community change efforts. http://bit.ly/MNYRYo

Everyday Young Heroes

Mackenzie Greer

Camarillo, CA

YSA recognizes 17-year-old Mackenzie Greer of Camarillo, California as an Everyday Young Hero for her work to support teens undergoing cancer treatment through her organization Fashion with Compassion.

In 2009, Mackenzie's maternal grandmother passed away after a battle with colon cancer, and in 2010 her paternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mackenzie decided to do something to contribute to the American Cancer Society, which had provided services to her grandmothers. While visiting Ventura County Medical Center Pediatric Oncology Department as a youth volunteer, Mackenzie noted that there were multiple services available for children with cancer, but there was virtually nothing that addressed the unique needs of adolescents and older teens going through cancer treatment. She decided to reach out to well-known clothing manufacturers and ask for clothing donations that would help young cancer patients fit in as they returned to school while undergoing treatment.

To date, Mackenzie has helped make over the closets of many needy teenagers affected by cancer. Fashion with Compassion has collected donations of hats, scarves, bags, t-shirts, and jackets from garment companies in California such as Quiksilver, Roxy, Stussy, and D.C. Shoes, to give to patients to lift their spirits, but also make them more comfortable about how they look while they are going through cancer treatment. To date, Mackenzie has collected over $25,000 worth of product donations, benefiting over 800 patients at 11 oncology departments throughout the country.

For her dedication to helping teenage cancer patients, we honor Mackenzie as an Everyday Young Hero.

Song of the Week

PBS Digital Studios - "Mister Rogers Remixed: Garden of Your Mind"

Mister Rogers Remixed | Garden of Your Mind | PBS Digital Studios

"
There are so many things to learn about in this world.
So many people who can help us learn.

Did you ever grow anything in the garden of your mind?
You can grow ideas in the garden of your mind.
It's good to be curious about many things.
You can think about things and make believe.
All you have to do is think, and they'll grow."
