Lily Rasco
Ocala, FL
YSA recognizes 11-year-old Lily Rasco of Ocala, Florida, as an Everyday Young Hero for her work to support foster children in her community.
Lily visited her Nana and discovered that she was making pillowcases for Raising Hope, a foster care organization in Pinellas County, Florida. Lily decided she wanted to do the same for foster children in her area, and asked her Nana to teach her how to sew pillowcases. To mobilize her community and get support, Lily put together a power point presentation to bring to the local churches, her dance studio, neighbors and friends. She contacted local businesses for in-kind donations and received donations from a local dentist who provided free toothbrushes and toothpaste for the project and the local Walgreens which committed to providing Lily discounts on pillows and toothbrushes. A local quilter donated a quilt to raffle off for additional funds to put towards blankets, pillows, fabric and other necessities. Lily also received free space to store materials and assemble pillow kits through The Centers, an organization that works with the foster care program in Marion County, Florida. Lily's work has changed the lives of the children who have benefited from her material support. The children that Lily supports rarely have more than the clothes on their back and Lily believes "everyone should have something they can call their own." Upon receiving a travel pillow from Lily's Closet, one little girl said "I'll treasure this forever." For her spirit of giving and her work to support children entering the foster care system, we honor Lily as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

Fleetwood Mac - "Don't Stop"
"If you wake up and don't want to smile If it takes just a little while Open your eyes and look at the day You'll see things in a different way ... Why not think about times to come? And not about the things that you've done If your life was bad to you Just think what tomorrow will do
Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop, it'll soon be here It'll be better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone..."
