Meeting Leaders will be the main point-of-contact for a District Day visit in their community. Everyday Young Heroes
|
Joy McBrien
Woodbury, MN
YSA recognizes 22-year-old Joy McBrien of Woodbury, Minnesota as an Everyday Young Hero for her work to support victims of domestic abuse in Peru.
Joy is a passionate advocate for female victims of domestic abuse and raises money to support a women's shelter in Peru. In 2008, Joy traveled to Chimbote Peru with her church to build a women's shelter and discovered that there was a high incidence of domestic violence. Upon her return to Minnesota, Joy, who had been making jewelry since the age of 16, decided to create jewelry to raise funds for the women's shelter. Joy currently sells her jewelry on Etsy and sends 100% of the proceeds to Chimbote. Joy has engaged friends and volunteers to help make jewelry, and through their work, dozens of women in the city of Chimbote have benefitted from this shelter. Joy is currently working as an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow at the Laura Jeffery Academy in Minnesota and is a Fulbright scholar applicant. She hopes to spend the next year living in Chimbote, where she plans to launch her own fair trade clothing company. For her dedication to improving the lives of Peruvian women and supporting victims of domestic abuse, we honor Joy as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

Song of the Week

Elton John (Lion King) - "Circle of Life"
"From the day we arrive on the planet And blinking, step into the sun There's more to see than can ever be seen More to do than can ever be done There's far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found But the sun rolling high Through the sapphire sky Keeps great and small on the endless round
It's the Circle of Life And it moves us all Through despair and hope Through faith and love Till we find our place..."
