Teens Create National Volunteer Site After Father's Deployment

After conquering the St. Louis volunteer scene, 20-year-old Simone Bernstein (a member of YSA's Youth Council) and her 18-year-old brother Jake, are going national. Their new website www.volunteennation.org launched on March 6 with a mission to help get the more than 72 million youth across the nation actively engaged in their communities. Volunteen Nation wants America's teens to give back to the community. To do this, Volunteen Nation is challenging every organization and corporate America to add a volunteer opportunity for teens to the site within the first 100 days. Teenagers are ready to take action, and dive into solving problems in the community. Anyone can volunteer at any age. Everyone can make a difference. Make a difference today, and find or post volunteer opportunities at www.volunteennation.org

Everyday Young Heroes

Crystal Buckingham

Jasper, GA

YSA recognizes 14-year-old Crystal Buckingham of Jasper, Georgia as an Everyday Young Hero for her work to support children in the foster care system and young victims of child abuse.

Crystal was put into foster care when she was five years old because she was a victim of abuse and after being adopted, she wanted to help other children in similar situations. She has organized various initiatives to support children in the foster care system, including "Teddy to the Rescue," a toy drive which collected over 2,000 teddy bears for children in local foster homes. She has also raised $500.00 for the Appalachian Children's Emergency Shelter by organizing a raffle fundraiser and $500.00 for the Pickens County Council on Child Abuse by selling handmade pinwheels. Her volunteer efforts have garnered the attention of local community leaders, including Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver, who worked with Crystal to create a program called "Through My Eyes" which is now part of the Family Court curriculum.  Crystal recently wrote a children's book about child abuse and her book is now being used by local elementary school counselors at Hill City Elementary School.

For her dedication to providing support to foster children and young victims of abuse, we honor Crystal as an Everyday Young Hero.
