Maddie Pelgrim
Oakton, VA
YSA recognizes 14 year old Maddie Pelgrim of Oakton, Virginia, as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her work to provide expanded volunteer opportunities for children through her non-profit Maddie's Blankets. When Maddie was 10 years old, she searched for volunteer opportunities and had difficulties finding volunteer positions for people her age. Maddie found a volunteer position at the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF), one of the only organizations that would let her volunteer. While volunteering, Maddie realized that the animals needed better blankets to sleep on and young children need more volunteer opportunities, and she decided to start her own non-profit. While originally created to make animal blankets, Maddie has expanded her organization's work to make comfort blankets for children in foster care and transitional housing situations. Maddie works closely with Volunteer Fairfax to provide local children with volunteer opportunities, and she has worked with volunteers from Girl Scouts, Brownies, Daisies, community groups, and church youth groups to make over 8,000 blankets in Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, Georgia, California and Kansas. The donated blankets have been given to animals in shelters, rescue organizations, local police departments, child protective services, transitional housing organizations, and low income daycares. For her dedication to engaging children in service through her organization, we honor Maddie as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

Girls and Reality TV
The Girl Scout Research Institute released its latest research study, Real to Me: Girls and Reality TV, at an event titled "Behind the Scenes: Girls and Reality TV." Overall, the findings of the study show that reality TV seems to impact girls on a personal and social level. Regular viewers seem to see the world in more confrontational terms and relate to their peers differently than do those who don't watch as much. Reality TV can serve as a learning tool, inspire families to explore new interests and activities, and encourage young people to get involved in social causes. In honor of MLK Day: Dion - "Abraham, Martin, and John"
"Anybody here seen my old friend Martin? Can you tell me where he's gone? He freed a lot of people, But it seems the good they die young. I just looked 'round and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things that they stood for? Didn't they try to find some good for you and me? And we'll be free Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day."
