Learn & Serve

Global Youth Service Day™  is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. Established in the United States in 1988, and globally in 2000, Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. GYSD is celebrated each year in more than 100 countries.

Many will serve and celebrate on GYSD as part of a Semester of Service™, an extended youth-led experience of at least 70 hours of learning and service.  Through this YSA school-focused strategy, students address issues of local, national, or global importance as they connect intentional learning goals and academic standards with substantive service.

Get Involved:

  • Mark the dates for GYSD - April 20-22, 2012 - on your calendar and begin planning. You'll be able to register your project on the GYSD website after MLK Day in January.

  • Youth in the U.S. can apply for a $500 Sodexo Youth Grant to help solve the problem of childhood hunger in their community. (1 in 5 children in the U.S. are at daily risk of hunger - help make sure no kid goes hungry in America!) Learn more at

    www.YSA.org/grants/sodexoyouth

  • Request a free GYSD poster, Semester of Service calendar poster, or Semester of Service Strategy Guide. www.YSA.org/resources/request
Download other planning resources at www.YSA.org/resources

  • Connect with one of our partners. In the U.S., find a GYSD Lead Agency or Sodexo Lead Organizer in your city or state. Around the world, find the Regional Partner organizing GYSD in your part of the world. (National organizations outside the U.S. can apply through December 31 to be a Country Partner to lead GYSD in your country.)

  • Teachers and students:  find out how you can connect what you are already teaching and learning with a service project for GYSD.  YSA's Education team is ready to help you enrich your class with a Semester of Service.  Please contact us at education@ysa.org

  • Tell all the young people you know - and friends, colleagues, teachers, neighbors - and encourage them to get involved.

  • Learn more about how the world changed on Global Youth Service Day 2011. See state and country summaries of GYSD activities at www.GYSD.org/report

On GYSD 2012, we will announce the inaugural YSA List: The 25 Most Powerful and Influential Young People. The YSA List will recognize 25 young people (ages 5 - 25) around the world who are making significant, large-scale change in Health, Education, Human Service, Human Rights, and the Environment. The 25 winners will receive $1,000 awards to support their ongoing efforts to change the world. Learn more and nominate a young person at www.YSA.org/25/list

I look forward to hearing more about your plans for GYSD over the next few months.
