YSA's 2011-2012 Grantees Convene at Youth Service Institute
Nearly 250 YSA Grantees convened this week at the 8th Annual Youth Service Institute in Philadelphia to be inspired, network with others in the youth engagement field, share best practices and great ideas, learn how to implement high quality service and service-learning programs, and prepare for Semester of Service and Global Youth Service Day 2012. 2012 Global Youth Service Day & Semester of Service Lead Agencies
Lead Agencies are local, regional, or statewide organizations across the United States and Canada that increase the scale, visibility, and impact of Global Youth Service Day by leading GYSD in their city, region, or state. Lead Agencies convene a planning coalition of at least 10 partner organizations that collectively engage at least 600 youth volunteers in service on GYSD, engage local media and elected officials, and plan a high profile signature project or celebration of service. Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm. See the 2012 Lead Agencies at www.YSA.org/grants/leadagency/2012

2012 Sodexo Lead Organizers
Sodexo Lead Organizers are organizations across the United States that work with partner organizations to engage at least 600 youth volunteers in learning about and addressing the issue of childhood hunger in their communities, beginning during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week (November 14-20) and continuing through Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) (April 20-22, 2012). Sodexo Lead Organizers also build new partnerships in their community and increase public awareness about the issue of hunger and young people's role in solving the problem. 2011-2012 STEMester of Service School Grantees
STEMester of Service Grantees are middle school educators who use service-learning to strengthen their delivery of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curricula. The program targets students from disadvantaged circumstances in states with the nation's highest dropout rates. Following the Semester of Service framework, student projects address critical environmental and disaster preparedness needs that are intentionally connected to state academic standards. STEMester of Service is funded by Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation of National and Community Service. 2011-2012 Sodexo School Engagement Grantees
Sodexo School Engagement Grantees engage students, grades K-12, in learning about the incidence of childhood hunger in their community, and in leading meaningful activities that facilitate access to nutritious food for all children, especially those most at risk. Grantees incorporate service-learning into a Semester of Service framework that engages students in a minimum of 70 hours of service and learning over a period of 10-14 weeks. This program focuses primarily on building the academic subject areas of civics, social studies and language arts, but also engages teachers and students other academic areas. State Farm is proud to team up with YSA to offer grants of up to $1,000 for service-learning projects in K-12 public schools in all fifty US states and the District of Columbia, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick. The State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants encourage semester-long projects. Up to 125 grants will be awarded; at least 10-15 grants will support projects addressing teen driver safety issues. Learn more at www.YSA.org/goodneighbor

YSA and CNCS are proud to support up to 16 MLK Day Lead Organizers with $4,000 planning grants to coordinate Martin Luther King Day of Service (January 16, 2012) activities. This grant program is open to nonprofit organizations, K-12 schools, and colleges & universities in all 50 states and DC. Grantees will be required to engage at least 3,000 volunteers in community service or service-learning projects on MLK Day, build or strengthen partnerships with at least 5 partner organizations, and address one or more strategic issue areas. The Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarships recognize and reward students who have made a significant impact in the fight against hunger. The scholarship recipients each receive $5,000 for their education as well as a $5,000 matching grant in their name for the hunger-related charity of their choice. Sholarships are open to students (Kindergarten through graduate school) enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Applicants must have demonstrated on-going commitment to their community by performing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States at least within the last 12 months. http://bit.ly/qImcz3

Katie's Krops is excited to announce a new grant opportunity for kids ages 9 to 16 to start a vegetable garden to feed people in need in their communities. The winner will be awarded a gift card to a garden center in their area (up to $400), support from Katie's Krops, and a digital camera to document the garden and the harvest. Applications for all types of vegetable gardens, such as a container garden if you live in a city or a vegetable garden located in your neighborhood or at your school, will be considered. Applicants must be between the ages of 9 and 16 as of October 1, 2011. http://bit.ly/mUscKv

Everyday Young Heroes

Brittany Ward
Jefferson City, TN
YSA recognizes Brittany Ward of Jefferson City, Tennessee as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her work to assess and improve the health of Jefferson County, TN. Brittany is a nursing major, and has dedicated over 140 hours per semester, and at least two summers of service to addressing community health issues. She has volunteered at the local rural medical clinic, in various community health settings, and in health awareness events; she is now undertaking a large project to assess and improve the health of Jefferson County. Jefferson County is a medically underserved area, with many health issues such as obesity, breathing problems, and sedentary lifestyle. Brittany is establishing the current needs of the area for leaders in public policy and for medical service providers. She is conducting an assessment of the health of Jefferson County via a community survey. She has partnered with the Jefferson County Health Council and is collecting data county-wide. She plans to utilize this data to develop health promotion curriculum to address the most evident needs. Brittany is networking, via the Health Council, with PTA's, community medical providers, and key policy makers to conduct the survey. She began research in Summer 2011 and is currently completing the survey, to be presented in April 2012. For her efforts to improve the health of her community, we honor Brittany as an Everyday Young Hero.
