Everyday Young Heroes

Brooklyn Wright
Powder Springs, GA
YSA recognizes nine year old Brooklyn Wright of Powder Springs, Georgia as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her work to promote environmental conservation through her litter prevention program. Brooklyn was frustrated with seeing trash on her playground at school and decided to do something to educate her peers. She wrote a book called "The Adventures of Earth Saver Girl: Don't Be a Litterbug," which centers on Brooklyn's superhero, Earth Saver Girl. This is the first book of a series of books Brooklyn plans to write to educate youth about going green, protecting our animals, having compassion for each other and getting out to play. Brooklyn also created an interactive litter prevention program where she travels to schools and events to educate youth about litter prevention and going green, and hosts an interactive website where kids can pledge not to be litterbugs, answer polls and quizzes, play games and download coloring pages. Her program continues to grown and Brooklyn now has her own annual eco fun day called A Day with Earth Saver Girl. For her efforts to inspire her peers and her creativity in promoting environmental conservation, we honor Brooklyn as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |

The Corporation for National and Community Service recently announced $700,000 in MLK Day grants for six organizations: Service for Peace, Points of Light Foundation, the Cesar Chavez Foundation, the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, HOPE Worldwide, and Youth Service America. Each of these six grantees is required to subgrant 80% of their funding to local MLK Day projects. All MLK Day Grant programs featured in this section are funded by CNCS funds. While you can apply for any or all grants, you cannot receive more than one of these grants for the same project. Each of these grant programs is required to award at least half of their grants to "out-of-network" (non-affiliate) grantees, so you do not need to be affiliated with any of these organizations to apply for their grant program.

Quote of the Week
| |
"With all the challenges that our country is facing right now, we don't just need you for the future; we actually need you now. America needs young people's passion and their ideas. We need your energy right now. I know you're up to it because I've seen it. Nothing inspires me more than knowing that young people all across the country are already making their marks. They're not waiting. They're making a difference now. "
