The following grant and award opportunities may interest you.  

In addition to our two school grant programs (STEMester of Service and Sodexo School Engagement grants) and the Sodexo Youth grants supporting youth-led projects addressing childhood hunger, YSA is proud to announce the 4th year of the UnitedHealth HEROES grants program.

The UnitedHealth HEROES program is a service-learning, health literacy initiative that awards grants to help youth, ages 5-25, create and implement local, hands-on programs to fight childhood obesity. The grants encourage semester-long projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 16, 2012) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22, 2012).

Schools, service-learning coordinators, non-profits, and students in the health professions located in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are eligible to apply for the $500 - $1,000 grants.

STEMester of Service Grants

Deadline Extended: August 15

YSA is seeking middle schools with large populations of disadvantaged youth in the 19 states with highest dropout rates (AK, AZ, CA, CO, DE, DC, GA, HI, IL, LA, MI, MT, NV, NM, NY, NC, RI, WA, WY). Grantees will engage students in a STEMester of Service addressing critical environmental and disaster preparedness needs and connecting them to STEM curricula. The $5,000 grant supports sustainable service projects that launch on MLK Day of Service (January 16, 2012) and culminate on GYSD (April 20-22, 2012). www.YSA.org/grants/stemester    

Sodexo School Engagement Grants 

Deadline: August 15

The Sodexo School Engagement grant program will support teachers and students, grades K-12, in learning about the incidence of childhood hunger in their community, and in leading meaningful activities that facilitate access to nutritious food for all children, especially those most at risk. The program will be implemented through a service-learning "Semester of Service" focused on childhood hunger that launches on MLK Day of Service (January 16, 2012) and culminates on GYSD (April 20-22, 2012).. 11 grantees will receive a $5,000 planning grant. www.YSA.org/grants/sodexoschool  

 

Sodexo Youth Grants

Deadline: September 16

YSA will award 25 Sodexo Youth Grants of $500 each to support youth-led service projects in the United States that address the issue of childhood hunger during National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week (November 13-20, 2011).  We're looking for projects that engage your peers, friends, families, neighbors, Sodexo employees, and other community members in creative, youth-inspired solutions to ending childhood hunger in your community. Do Something 9/11 Remembrance Grants

Deadline: September 1

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th, Do Something and American Express are teaming up to offer grants to take action and start your own projects in your communities. We're looking for projects that have been started or are being planned in the spirit of September 11th including youth-led projects that recognize and commemorate our emergency responders, our troops, and programs that promote diversity all across the country. These can be on-going projects, or projects specifically planned around the 10th anniversary of September 11th. Winners will be announced on 9/11. http://bit.ly/qJSJ8y  

Ashoka's 5th Annual Staples Youth Social Entrepreneur Competition

Deadline: September 9

The Staples YSE Competition is a global competition created by Staples Foundation and Ashoka to recognize exceptional young people who are advancing positive change in their communities and around the world. This year's global competition is open to any youth, ages 12-24, who uses technology to find solutions to society's most pressing challenges. Four winning teams will receive a $500 cash prize and an all expenses paid trip to Techonomy, an elite conference held in Tucson, Arizona that convenes thought leaders, innovators, and changemakers from the technology sector.  http://bit.ly/nCjcuU      

 

KaBOOM! Let's Play Spruce Grants

Deadline: September 15, October 15, November 15

With support from Dr Pepper Snapple Group, KaBOOM! will be awarding grants of $750 each to communities this year who wish to make their playgrounds cleaner, safer and more inviting. Communities must demonstrate that they have maintained their playspace and they have led an improvement project in the last 60 days. Communities that demonstrate this will receive a $750 gift card to further enhance or improve their playspace. http://bit.ly/qNmqCs  

Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grants

Deadline: October 14 or 1,500 applications

The Toolbox for Education Grant Program provides grants of $2,000 to $5,000 to public K-12 schools and school parent-teacher groups associated with public schools throughout the U.S. that develop projects that encourage parent involvement and build stronger community spirit. Preference is given to funding requests that have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement (both indoor and outdoor) and landscaping/clean up projects. The deadline is October 14; however, if 1,500 applications are received before the deadline, the application process will close. http://bit.ly/orX4N1      

 

Light Up A Landmark for Lights On Afterschool Contest

Deadline: September 23

Thanks to longtime afterschool champion jcpenney, afterschool programs have another reason to get revved up for Lights On Afterschool this October 20: Tell us what you can light up for your Lights On Afterschool celebration and you may win up to $5,000! Start by registering for Lights On Afterschool and using the Event Planning Kit Eleven event winners will be selected nationwide: one Megawatt award winner: $5,000 and ten Spotlight award winners: $1,000. http://bit.ly/ouOxGF    

Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award

Deadline: September 23

The Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award given by the National Youth Leadership Council, recognizes an individual whose life has had a distinctive impact on service-learning. The recipient of the award personifies leadership, courage, creativity, and compassion - values Dickson felt characterized people he most respected.  The award will be presented at the National Service-Learning Conference in Minneapolis, Minn., April 11-14, 2012. The Global Green USA's Green School Makeover Competition

Deadline: September 30

Would you like to give your school a 'Green School makeover'? If so, Global Green USA wants to hear about it! To enter 'The Global Green USA's Green School Makeover Competition', work on an essay with a teacher, a parent, or your school's PTA. The winner of the contest will win the grand prize, a $65,000 'Global Green USA Green Makeover' for their school. Global Green USA will also award four finalists $2,500 to be used on green projects within their school. http://bit.ly/mxlHiY

 

Home Depot Community Impact Grants Program 

Deadline: October 31

Proposals for the following community improvement activities will be considered: repairs, refurbishments, and modifications to low-income and/or transitional housing or community facilities, weatherizing or increasing energy efficiency of low-income and/or transitional housing or community facilities; planting trees or community gardens and/or landscaping community facilities; and development of community parks or green spaces. Grants of up to $5,000 are made in the form of The Home Depot gift cards for the purchase of tools, materials, or services. http://bit.ly/eIis5T
