STEMester of Service e-Newsletter Vol. 2 #10

A A warm mid-summer hello, from steamy Washington, DC, to our STEMester of Service "Class of 2011"!   We hope that by now, you are each enjoying a well-deserved summer break.  We are sending you this special edition of the STEMester newsletter to update you on a number things:

 Reports and Evaluation Outcomes

Thanks so much for your diligence in completing both the LASSIE reports and the RMC Research surveys.  You broke all records in returning your data:  you have topped the charts at RMC, returning more surveys and data than any other participating program!  What a team!

Linda Fredericks reports that this will provide us with a very rich, credible source from which to extract our outcomes metrics. Look for the RMC data to be sent to you by late-August, in time to share with your school leadership in early September.

A Special Opportunity - with a small stipend for you!

I have spoken with several of you already, in response to a request from editors at Principal Leadership, the official magazine of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  They have asked us to prepare a series of 2 - 3 articles about your STEMester programs, to be featured in the December 2011 issue.

For the first article:
YSA will write the section outlining the overall program and its elements.  We will look to any of YOU who are willing to do so to craft two or three paragraphs (up to 300 words) about your program experience.  If possible, we would love to have quotes from your students embedded into your paragraphs.
We would suggest you pick one of the following topics to feature:

  • How the program connected to and helped students meet academic standards,
  • How the program engaged your students in new and exciting ways for them
  • How the program helped students with career/workforce or post-secondary education readiness
  • How the program helped you, your students, and your school develop important and sustainable community partnerships

For the second article:
This one will feature the professional development experience that the program provided to YOU as participating teachers.  We invite you to submit to us two or three paragraphs (up to 300 words) about this aspect of your experience, featuring:

  • How engagement with this program has changed the way you teach
  • How service-learning is taking off in your school district, as a result of this program
  • The role of administrative support in the success of the program - and the value to the administration in being seen as engaging the school in giving back to the community
  • For those of you who served as mentors or mentees in this past year of the program, your responses to that experience

YSA can offer you $150 as a stipend for any of your 2-3 paragraph contriubutions that we will be able to use in these articles.  Please contact Susan ASAP at sabravanel@ysa.org if you are interested;  include which article you would like to submit a piece for, and what topic you would like to feature.

Are you planning to be a STEMester school again next year?

Please let us know!

Last month, each of you received a personalized message, including the links to the specific grant applications that you would need to complete, if you are planning to be a STEMester school again next year.

The application deadline is August 8th, 2011 - you still have plenty of time to work out your details and submit your application - but we would like to have an idea of how many returning grantees we will have in the group.  Please let Susan know now if you think you will re-apply, by sending an e-mail to sabravanel@ysa.org

With appreciation,
