Help Save Service in America
The service field rallied once already this year during the FY11 budget debate - and all your calls, emails, events, and meetings to engage members of Congress made the difference. Together we won back most of the budget for national service programs, but now we need to do it again as the FY12 budget debate heats up in Congress and elimination of funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service remains a real threat. Recruit (or become!) a District Captain for the Save Service Summer District Days on July 20 and August 10. It just takes a few hours a week, and the Save Service campaign will provide our District Captains will all the materials and staff support necessary to generate strong local engagement. http://bit.ly/lwLjER

Everyday Young Heroes

Yasmine ArringtonWashington, DC
YSA recognizes seventeen year old Yasmine Arrington of Washington, DC, as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her work to provide college scholarships for students with incarcerated parents. Yasmine is the founder of ScholarCHIPS (Children of Incarcerated Parents), a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to raising college funds for children of incarcerated parents in her community. Yasmine's passion for the cause is a direct result of personal experience as the child of an incarcerated parent. When applying for college scholarships, Yasmine realized that there were no scholarship opportunities to support other children with incarcerated parents and she decided to take action by engaging her community in the cause. ScholarCHIPs was created as a venture project with a grant from LearnServe International, a social entrepreneur non profit that works with teenagers to bring their ideas to fruition through a year long project. Since its launch, ScholarCHIPS has employed several creative means to fundraise, including letter-writing campaigns and charity runs. In a short span of time, Yasmine was able to raise $5,000 dollars that helped high school seniors in her area attend college. In the long run, Yasmine hopes to be able to give away three $10,000 scholarships a year. She has also brought much media attention to the challenges that children of incarcerated parents face. Yasmine has been interviewed by the Washington Post and she has presented about this topic at American University and the Urban League. Yasmine will begin her first year of college at Elon University this fall and she plans to continue her work to provide opportunities for children with incarcerated parents to go to college and escape the cycle of poverty and prison. For her work and continued dedication, we honor Yasmine as an Everyday Young Hero. To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero. |
