News From the Field

USA Today Profiles Cities of Service Use of Impact Volunteering

"In an era of dwindling revenue and slashed spending, volunteerism is becoming a crucial part of city operations and a strategy to solve its most pressing problems. The goal: turn piecemeal civic efforts into organized citywide campaigns that concentrate volunteer power on programs that benefit the community at large. Enter "chief service officers," paid city employees whose job is to bring together volunteers, community groups and sponsors and get them to work towards the city's goals." The New York Times Features Do Something Going Mobile

The New York Times recently profiled Do Something's decision to go mobile in reaching out to teen volunteers.  "No longer could it rely on its Web site to motivate young people to take part in social activism. Instead, it would rely on mobile technology ... The goal is to use mobile technology to sign up 3.8 million members by 2014, up from 1.2 million in 2010 who were involved in at least one of the more than 50 "campaigns" Do Something runs each year." Everyday Young Heroes

Jamie Bacigalupo

El Paso, TX

YSA recognizes eight year old Jamie Bacigalupo from El Paso, Texas, as one of our Everyday Young Heroes for her work to provide comfort and support for hospitalized children through her Angels4Epilepsy Program.

Jamie was diagnosed with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy at the age of five and after experiencing what it is like to be hospitalized, she made it her personal mission to raise awareness about epilepsy and to bring smiles to hospitalized children. Jamie started Angels4Epilepsy, Inc. in Georgia in 2010.  Her goal was to help other children hospitalized as a result of her personal experiences with numerous doctor visits, tests and hospitalizations.  Jamie understands how scary and boring a hospital can be and through her program, she is providing young hospital patients fun activities to take their minds off their illnesses.

Through 2010, she delivered over 300 gift bags to local children's hospitals and the Ronald McDonald House in Georgia and Florida.  She was responsible for using her own money and raising funds to purchase the items for her gift bags.  In July, Jamie will deliver over 100 gift bags to a children's hospital in Indiana.

For her support of young hospital patients and her desire to make their hospital stays fun, we honor Jamie as an Everyday Young Hero. To learn more about Angels4Epilepsy, visit www.angels4epilepsy.org

To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero.
