STEMester of Service e-Newsletter Vol. 2 #9 |
|
|
|
Dear ,
| |
Memorial Day is this weekend, and the end of the school year is not far behind it! With a very successful GYSD behind us, we at YSA have had a very busy May schedule completing the remaining site visits to your schools!
What an inspirational opportunity our site visits have been for us, visiting the passionate and innovative teachers and committed students. Each of you has embraced service-learning and shown it to be an effective teaching and learning strategy, making such a difference for your students in their schools and communities. Thank you for all that you do! We're in the process of wrapping up and reporting on Semester of Service and Global Youth Service Day 2011 and starting to plan for Semester of Service and GYSD 2012.
We invite you to view the Semester of Service and GYSD 2011 Preliminary Report at www.YSA.org/news/gysdimpact.) In addition to that are the two reporting requirements - the RMC surveys and the LASSIE report - unique to the STEMester program; please see our important notes about these below.
Even as we are closing out one year, we are preparing for the next. Yesterday, our new GYSD and Semester of Service posters, as well as the newly revised Semester of Service Strategy Guide arrived in the office. We look forward to sharing these online and in hard copy (as requested) with you in early June! You may have heard that in the recent federal budget continuing resolution process, Learn and Serve America was completely eliminated. While this is certainly bad news for the service-learning field as a whole, we are pleased to reassure you that YSA received all 3 years of our STEMester of Service funding as part of the 2009 budget cycle. This means that we will be able to continue this program through the 2011-2012 school year. This newsletter contains important updates on how to finish your reporting for this year, and a look ahead to help you plan for next year. We wish you a pleasant long weekend, and a wonderful culmination to your school year!

Reporting your Successes

An Important Special Note About Your Reports: Please Read!
We are increasingly aware of the importance of telling the story of your successes - both as narratives, and in measurable outcomes. In fact, we have been directly told that the demise of Learn and Serve America was because Congress did not have stories such as these, that they did not understand the value of service-learning in engaging students around the country!
Your reports are more important than ever this year. Please do take the time to complete our YSA Community Impact Survey, all of your RMC Surveys - for students, teachers, and community partners, and your LASSIE Reports. As we continue to seek renewal of federal funding, we need to have the data that show the measurable outcomes of your hard work!
YSA Community Impact Survey - DUE JUNE 3rd YSA asks a standard set of questions of all of our grantees. Most questions we ask all grantees are included in the RMC Surveys or the LASSIE Report. However, there are a few questions that we need to ask you separately. We've created a very short, 3 question survey to collect this information. Please take 5 minutes and complete this by next Friday, June 3. http://bit.ly/iAimJT RMC Surveys - DUE JUNE 3rd You should have been receiving regular e-mail updates from Linda Fredericks, about your RMC report requirements. She has just sent a final reminder to complete the Student Surveys, Teacher Surveys, and Community Partner Surveys. Also, if you have not yet sent in parent permission forms and class rosters to RMC Research, please do so now. These are needed for both STEMester and comparison students. The rosters need to include students' names, birthdates, and school ID numbers.
All surveys and reports need to go to Linda, at the address below. If you have any questions regarding this request, please email Linda at fredericks@rmcdenver.com Linda Fredericks Research Associate RMC Research 633 17th Street, Suite 2100 Denver, CO 80202 LASSIE Report - DUE JUNE 15th The completion of LASSIE is a Learn and Serve America grant requirement. If you were unable to attend the February 28th LASSIE webinar, the session has been recorded and posted under the "Help" section on www.lsareports.org. The "Help" section is located on the top-right corner of the www.lsareports.org webpage. If you do not know your LASSIE log-in information, you can call the LASSIE hotline at 866-337-8751.
We will check in with you again next week, to be sure everyone has what is needed to complete all reports on time.

2011-2012 STEMester of Service Grant Applications
We will be posting the new applications for the 2011-2012 STEMester of Service school year in the next couple of weeks. - Teachers who started in 2010-2011 as mentees of 2009-2010 grantees: For 2011-2012, you will be required to bring on another teacher from your own school. If this is not possible, you can work with your mentor teacher and recruit a second teacher at another school in your district.

Kohala Middle School - Kapaau, HI Lani Bowman's students recently won First Place in the Middle School (6-8) divison of Siemen's We Can Change the World Challenge for their STEMester of Service project. The team developed "6000 n 60," a household battery recycling effort to collect 6,000 batteries in 60 days. 6000 n 60 met their goal of collecting 6,000 batteries and the team is using their data to lobby the country for better battery recycling opportunities. The group also intends to speak to their state representative about state involvement as battery recycling is an issue state, nation and worldwide.
