STEMester of Service e-Newsletter Vol. 2 #7 |
|
|
|
Dear ,
| |
With the warm weather and the chirping birds, it feels like spring has already arrived in Washington, DC. It also feels like spring has arrived within the STEMester of Service program; after months of planning, projects are underway and beginning to bear fruit.
On the west coast, in southern California, the Green Abalone Ambassadors of Warner Middle School participated in their community's Tet Festival, presenting information about watershed restoration and their efforts to raise and release abalone (You can follow them on Facebook, "Green Abalone"). On the east coast, through an interdisciplinary effort involving math, science and English content knowledge, students at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, DC have gathered baseline data about home energy, gas and water usage. They will use this information to create a community education campaign aimed at reducing energy usage.
Please continue to share your stories and successes with us as your projects take off.
This issue of the newsletter contains updates on the following topics:
- LASSIE report;
- RMC Research process;
- Youth blogs;
- Site visit schedule and;
- Global Youth Service Day resources.
Enjoy!

LASSIE Report
Learn and Serve America will host a second online training webinar on the LASSIE reporting process, Monday, February 28 at 2pm EST.
This hour-long training course will build on the LASSIE 101 trainings this past fall and review in more detail the grant reporting surveys for grantees and subgrantees, which have been updated since last year. The webinar will also provide time to answer questions you may have about navigating the new LASSIE web interface. This year, LASSIE will open for reporting Tuesday, March 1 and will close Wednesday, June 15.
You must register for the webinar by clicking on the following link. Once you register for the webinar, you will receive an email with the link to the online session as well as a dial-in number:
https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/237748353
If you are unable to attend the webinar, the session will be recorded and posted under the "Help" section on www.lsareports.org. You will also be able to refer back to the training when you are completing the online reporting survey in June.
The completion of LASSIE is a Learn and Serve America grant requirement.
RMC Surveys
Thank you to everyone who has sent parent permission forms and class rosters to RMC Research. For those of you have not yet done so, please mail any returned parent permission forms, as well as class rosters for those classes involved in the evaluation, both STEMester and comparison students, to Linda Fredericks at the address below. The rosters need to include students' names, birthdates, and school ID numbers. If you have any questions regarding this request, please email Linda at fredericks@rmcdenver.com.

Reflecting on your Project
| By Friday March 4th, we would like to receive a youth blog from one (or more) of your students. The content and format of the blog is up to you and your students. Your students can submit a poem, an essay, a video, an interview, a glogster "poster" -- whatever works best for your project. The blog should be a reflection of your project thus far: What have your students enjoyed about the project? What have they learned? What are their goals for the project? What is their vision for their community?
For additional reflection questions, check out pgs. 26, 44, 52, and 62-67 of the Semester of Service Strategy Guide.
In order for your students and school to receive positive attention for their STEMester of Service efforts, we will post the submitted pieces on YSA's ADDService blog site: www.YSA.org/blog
Teachers, administrators and community partners are also welcome to submit blog entries! We encourage teachers and administrators to submit a blog that reflects on the ways service-learning has impacted student achievement and/or classroom climate or a reflection on why you enjoy teaching via service-learning.
If you need a youth waiver form in order to post the youth blog on the ADDService website, please send me an email at sguy@ysa.org.

| Connecting with YSA | | New GYSD website
www.GYSD.org
YSA has recently launched the new GYSD website! On the new site, you can:
- Download the new GYSD Toolkit: www.GYSD.org/resources
- Register and post your STEMester of Service project on the GYSD Project Map, as well as learn about projects taking place all over the world. This is a particularly good task to assign to one of your students, to register your project on the map by Tuesday, March 15.
- Enroll to participate in a Global Learning Exchange. Partner with a school in another country so that you can share across borders what you are doing, learn about what they are doing, and even collaborate on your service-learning projects: http://www.GYSD.org/exchange
