Dear ,

Happy New Year!

Martin Luther King Day, marking the official launch of STEMester of Service, is just around the corner - only 10 days away! Are you, your students and community partners excited?

Based on conversations that Susan and I have had with you, we know that you are preparing and ready to get started.  We have been so impressed with your efforts and plans thus far, that we have shared your projects with a leading global technology company, and they are interested in working to support each of you.  We need to hear from you, to be sure that this partnership truly responds to what you need!  Please see "Partnering with a Global Technology Company" below.

This issue of the newsletter includes updates on the following topics:

  • RMC student pre-surveys;
  • Technology mentorship opportunity;
  • Martin Luther King Day of Service resources, including a media release template;
  • Watershed conference call;
  • Examples of great MLK Day plans.

Enjoy!

Reporting Your Successes

RMC Student Pre-Surveys - Due January 14th

January 14th is the last day to complete and submit the student pre-surveys for both your service-learning students and the comparison classroom students.
Each grantee teacher should have a minimum of 20 students complete the pre-survey.

The pre-surveys are available at the following site:

www.rmcdenver.com/STEMester

If you have any questions about the pre-surveys, please email Linda Fredericks at fredericks@rmcdenver.com

Your participation is required; it will increase the credibility of the evaluation and of the STEMester of Service program itself.

Partnering with a Global Technology Company
YSA is developing a very exciting partnership with a leading international technology company, which will add a unique, beneficial new resource to your STEMester of Service.  Through this partnership, we are looking to provide you and your students with professional engineering and/or technology mentors.

We have created a very brief questionnaire for you - just three short questions.  The questionnaire will take less than 5 minutes to complete - we promise!  Your responses will help us design a program that meets your needs, as well as the needs of your students and school community.

Susan and I will be meeting with the company on January 19th.  Please submit the questionnaire by Wednesday, January 12th so that Susan and I can develop a proposal based on your feedback.

The questionnaire is available on the following site:

http://tinyurl.com/26om4oy

We look forward to your comments and suggestions!

Note:  The deadline for the questionnaire was extended from December 10th to January 12th.

Sharing Successes
First Creek Middle School, Tacoma, WA:  On MLK Day, 30-40 First Creek Middle School students, along with family members and students and staff from University of Puget Sound and University of Washington-Tacoma, will be working together with a local community based group to remove a large amount of ivy, an invasive species found in the First Creek watershed.

Kohala Middle School, Kapaau, HI: Twenty-two students from Kohala Middle School will launch their "6,000 in 60" STEMester of Service program by honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Kapaau is a rural community with limited access to recycling options; the local recycling center does not recycle household batteries.  STEMester of Service students are addressing this need by creating battery drop-off sites around the community.  The students aim to collect and recycle 6,000 household batteries (the approximate population of North Kohala) in 60 days.
The MLK kick-off event will not only explain the STEMester of Service "6,000 in 60" program but will also include youth created skits.  Students will recite parts of Dr. Martin Luther King's speeches to remind the community of their strength of commitment to impact causes of importantance to them.

Here is an excerpt from the speech that the students have prepared for the event:

"MLK had a dream that all people regardless of race would come together.  We, the students of Kohala, as well have a dream on this day that all of us will come together to take care of our aina (land).  We ask all of us to make the pono (right) choices to help in doing so.  Our efforts to keep household batteries out of the landfill is just one tiny way we can do this.  The choices we kamali'l (young people) make and the choices you makue (adults) help us learn to make will help determine our future and that for generations to come. We hope your commitment to help this program succeed will be a beacon to other communities in Hawaii and serve to enlighten people on ways they can help our precious island home."

Best,
