STEMester of Service e-Newsletter Vol. 2 #2
|
|
|
|
Dear ,
| One month ago, we all returned home from the Youth Service Institute.
Since then, much of our focus has been on taking care of many of the nuts and bolts -- recruiting comparison teachers, getting student pre-surveys started, disbursing checks. All checks have now been sent out. Please connect with the responsible party at your school or organization to be sure that your check has been received.
And now it's time to get to the fun part -- delving into the planning and implementation of your STEMester of Service!
Over the next few weeks, Susan and I will schedule individual phone calls with each of you to talk about your STEMester of Service plans. We hope you are as excited about these phone calls as Susan and I are.
This issue of the newsletter includes updates on the following topics:
- LASSIE Report webinar;
- Resources posted on GoToServiceLearning.org;
- Successes from First Creek Middle School
Enjoy!

Connecting to YSA and the Youth Service Movement
| At the Youth Service Institute, did you enjoy talking with Cities of Service grantees or sharing service project ideas with Lead Agencies? Would you like to continue those conversations and receive a constant stream of service-focused ideas and inspiration? Our social media efforts provide you with an opportunity to not only stay on top of the latest news and resources from YSA, but also stay connected to YSA grantees around the world: YSA can be your and your student's portal to the youth service movement! |
Highlighting Successes
| STEMester of Service participants at First Creek Middle School (Tacoma, WA) were featured in their school district's newsletter. Well done, Donna, Deb, University of Washington-Tacoma and all of your students!
Eagles, Dawgs plant more than 200 trees, shrubs On Saturday, Oct. 23, rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of 45 First Creek Middle School Eagles and University of Washington-Tacoma Dawgs, when they came together to plant more than 200 trees and shrubs in the First Creek watershed. "The planting was hard work due to the very rocky soil and the students joked that it might be easier to grow rocks at the site than trees," said Donna Chang, science teacher at First Creek and STEMester of Service grantee. "But perseverance won out and the planting was accomplished." The fall planting is a continuation of the partnership that developed between First Creek Middle School science students and their UWT science counterparts. In addition to the joint watershed restoration activities, both groups continue to collaborate on efforts to study the human impact on storm water. This year's efforts will include a public awareness campaign intended to get all First Creek community members involved in making behavior changes that will improve the health of our water. As First Creek student Daemien Zarapkar said, "We need everyone to understand that the pollution that goes into the storm drains goes directly out to the Puget Sound. We can all make a difference." The trees that are planted in the watershed will help filter storm water runoff from the surrounding community.
