 Dear Colleague in Service,

It's a big week for service.

President Obama Signs Edward M. Kennedy Serve America ActOn Tuesday, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law, stating that service "involves our greatest resources - our citizens - in remaking this nation." He also announced Maria Eitel, currently President of the Nike Foundation, as his nominee to be the new CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

This weekend, millions of young people around the world will improve their communities and change the world during Global Youth Service Day (April 24-26, 2009). They will participate in and lead community service and service-learning projects, organize events highlighting and celebrating service and service-learning that take place throughout the year, and raise awareness of the role of young people as leaders by engaging the media and elected officials.

As of today, over 1,800 projects have been registered on our global event map in all 50 states and in over 60 countries around the world. Register your project or find projects and events in your area at: http://gysd.org/map/2009

National Volunteer WeekThis week is also National Volunteer Week. The 2009 National Volunteer Week theme, Celebrating People in Action, captures the meaning behind this signature week: honoring the individuals who take action and solve problems in their communities. This celebratory week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership.
SPECIAL FEATURE: GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY 2009

GYSD Banner 2009

Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual service event in the world. GYSD highlights and celebrates the difference youth make in their communities year-round through community service and service-learning. On April 24-26, 2009, millions of young will participate in and lead service projects in all 50 states and in more than 100 countries around the world. Young people, working with their families, schools, community organizations, faith-based communities, and businesses, will improve their communities by addressing critical issues such as global climate change, education & illiteracy, poverty, health, hunger, and homelessness.

Partnerships Increase Scale, Diversity, Impact of GYSD
Local, state, national, and international organizations in every sector are mobilizing their networks on GYSD:

Celebrities Promote Global Youth Service Day
Our media campaign results in over a billion media impressions annually, much of it local media outlets covering local projects (collected on ServiceWire). This year, several celebrities have helped promote GYSD, including:

SPECIAL FEATURE: SERVE AMERICA ACT

President Obama Signs Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act
President Obama delivered an early victory for a central cause of his Administration by signing into law a sweeping expansion of national service that will engage millions of Americans in addressing local needs through volunteer service. The President signed the landmark Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act today at a Washington DC elementary school, joined by Vice President Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr, Jill Biden, Members of Congress, former President Clinton, former First Lady Rosalyn Carter, and an audience of nonprofit leaders and national service volunteers. After signing the bill, the President, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Dr. Jill Biden, and former President Bill Clinton will plant trees and restore habitat in an environmental service project with AmeriCorps members and high school students at a local park. The Serve America Act reauthorizes and expands national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency created in 1993. The Corporation engages four million Americans in result-driven service each year, including 75,000 AmeriCorps members, 492,000 Senior Corps volunteers, 1.1 million Learn and Serve America students, and 2.2 million additional community volunteers mobilized and managed through the agency's programs.

President Obama Announces Nominee for CEO of Corporation for National and Community Service
President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate Maria Eitel to be Chief Executive Officer for the Corporation for National and Community Service. "I am deeply honored to be nominated to become CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. President Obama and all those who champion service have led us to this historic moment to redefine citizenship in this country. Should I be confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to helping make President Obama's vision a reality for everyone," said Maria Eitel. Maria Eitel is the President of the Nike Foundation and a Vice President of NIKE, Inc. As president of the Nike Foundation, she has lead the Foundation's work to increase opportunities for the world's most disadvantaged girls. Read more here.

First Lady Michelle Obama Remarks on Service
In addition to her letter to the editor last week in USA Today ("Nation needs youthful idealism more than ever") she also made remarks today while speaking with children of White House employees on Take Your Child to Work Day. She said, "But most of all we want you to think about serving your communities, because you don't have to be a White House employee to do it.  You can do it now.  You can do it first of all by listening to your parents. That's a service in and of itself, just being a good kid.  But you could volunteer at a homeless shelter, right?  You could work for a soup kitchen.  You could volunteer in a garden.  You could help tutor another kid in your class who's having trouble.  You could walk your neighbor's dog, mow the lawn.  There's so much that you can do right now. And we want you all to start thinking now about what you can do to be good public servants, not when you grow up but right now." YSA President & CEO Steve Culbertson commends Michelle Obama's focus on youth in a letter to the editor "Harness energy of youth to serve others" in Wednesday's USA Today: http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2009/04/harness-energy-of-young-people-to-serve-others.html

Senators Murkowski, Dodd Receive Prestigious Harris Wofford Award from Youth Service America
Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) received the Harris Wofford Award for Public Officials yesterday at a ceremony held in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center at 3:00. The Senators were honored for their outstanding commitment to national service initiatives. The Harris Wofford Awards, presented by Youth Service America and sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, were established in 2002 to honor former Senator Harris Wofford, one of our nation's greatest public servants and long-time board member of Youth Service America.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a recipient of the Harris Wofford Public Official Award, has introduced a U.S. Senate resolution each year since 2003, with as many as 43 co-sponsors, officially recognizing Global Youth Service Day and honoring young people who serve their communities across the country and around the world. She also helped secure recognition of Global Youth Service Day in the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. In addition, she participates in Global Youth Service Day celebrations each year in Alaska organized by Anchorage's Promise, a GYSD Lead Agency, and issues a press release recognizing all GYSD projects that take place in Alaska. Watch a video of Senator Murkowski's remarks.

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), a recipient of the Harris Wofford Public Official Award, is an alumnus of the Peace Corps and a longtime champion of national and community service. Senator Dodd is the Co-Chair of the Senate National Service Caucus. He introduced the Semester of Service Act that would offer young people the chance to spend a semester in service as part of service-learning programs for academic credit as well as the Summer of Service Act that would provide middle school students with a chance to serve in their local communities over the summer months. Both Semester of Service and Summer of Service were included in the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. Senator Dodd has also introduced the Peace Corps Volunteer Empowerment Act, the AmeriCorps: Together Improving Our Nation Act, and the Encore Service Act.
