Bibliotheek VANnU Implements Iguana
Following the implementation of Iguana at the public library of Breda, the public library of VANnU in Roosendaal, the Netherlands, went live with the Iguana platform in November 2010. The library implemented Iguana to renew its web site and to provide users with interactive ways to explore the library's collections and services.
Public Library VanNU serves the communities of Roosendaal, Halderberge en Moerdijk. With Iguana, the library delivers new online services to its users. Throughout the site, an interactive book river displays recommended items from the library's collections. Users can view personalized suggestions and most popular items. Other features include integrated mashups such as Google maps, word clouds, faceted search, and personal profiles where users can create their own interest profiles and view recommended items. The library's catalog has been directly integrated in the site enabling users to explore the library's collections from any page.
"We had been looking for a suitable product for quite some time", says Joëlle Bakx- Domburg, project manager, Bibliotheek VANnU. "The objective was to find a solution that would provide ease-of-use and better service to our existing customers, and would also help us connect with people who currently do not use the library's services. We settled on Iguana because the platform delivers a complete solution; it links our catalog and website, provides a nice presentation and offers our users many personalization features."
Joëlle continues: "Iguana has been very well received by our users. People are enthusiastic and happily surprised with the new look of our site. They particularly enjoy the interactive animations, email notifications, and the ability to create interest profiles. In fact - 140 people created an interest profile in the first couple of days, while we hadn't yet communicated the availability of this feature. So it has been a very good experience for us and our users."

From our Managing Director

Dear customer,
Welcome to the April edition of our customer newsletter. In this edition, we would like to highlight our new product, Iguana, and tell you a bit more about what it can mean for your library. To do so, we have chosen a different approach; this newsletter showcases the Iguana features that re-define how you engage with your users online.
A number of our customers have chosen Iguana in the recent months. We now have libraries using Iguana in the Netherlands and Belgium, with libraries in the UK, Canada and Belgium to follow soon. Iguana, unlike a 'traditional' portal, brings together your website and catalog in one environment. Your users can now learn about your collections and your services in one place. But it's also an environment that links the library to the 'outside' world. Through mashups - think of Google maps, YouTube videos, Twitter feeds and more - you integrate your library into the broader information and internet landscape.
Today, of course, no solution is complete without support for mobile platforms. We have developed Iguana both with support for a mobile web display, as well as an Iguana app (currently available for the Android OS). With mobile apps increasingly on the rise, Iguana will certainly offer your users an additional, convenient way to access the library's collections and services.
If you would like more information about Iguana, please feel free to contact your account representative. I am looking forward to hearing your feedback.
Best regards,
Ann Melaerts

Each Iguana page delivers a true Web 2.0 experience by focusing on the user and placing the full breadth of your services front-and-center. The Iguana platform provides the library with a flexible web presence. You can create as many pages as you want. Each page can highlight a particular part of your collection - say music or fiction - or a particular service such as this week's library events.
Widgets
Iguana is based on widgets. Your users can move content around on the page, and decide how much content to see. They can collapse or expand widgets at will, and optionally move them to other environments such as their iGoogle page.
Featured items
A key Iguana feature is the presentation of 'featured items' throughout your site. Featured items are covers of books, DVDs, CDs, etc. that are displayed in an animation. When hovering over the cover, the user views the item's details and can immediately place a reservation.
The featured items animation can also be personalized for each user. Within Iguana the user can select from a list of interest topics. After logging in, the animation will display items that have been tailored towards the user's specific interests.
Mashups
Through mashups you can integrate different types of content within Iguana. You can overlay your hours and locations with Google maps, for example. You can also include RSS feeds, or your library's Twitter feed and display this prominently on your home page. |
| |
Iguana provides your users with a rich discovery environment. Users can initiate a search on any page, and search both your site and catalog at the same time. Search results display the item's cover including the full record details. Users can immediately place reservations and share items with others in external environments. They can sort results, view associated works, and restrict their search further through facets (e.g. location, material type and language).
The library may also include links to external content through a Wikipedia word cloud or via the integration of an OpenURL resolver. |
| |
My Library is the user activities component of Iguana. Here users can link their account to other users (say a parent who wants to view a child's account), view their loan history and place reservations. They can also create a personal interest profile with their favorite authors or genres. Iguana automatically collects new titles that match the user's interest profile and displays these in a personalized flash animation. Users can also register to receive updates of newly available titles via email.
