wtaThe WTA Board had the opportunity to meet with both gubernatorial candidates this summer. We are thankful for the chance to have a frank discussion about the economic benefits of the tourism industry. Both candidates acknowledged the value tourism brings to the state. We continue to share our message that our industry generates over $1 billion in visitor tax revenues to Washington State and is vital to economic development.

The Long Term Funding/Advocacy Committee (LTFA) continues to hold meetings evaluating possible long-term funding mechanisms. In coordination with the DMO's throughout the state the committee has held regional focus groups to discuss ideas and concepts for the funding model moving forward. The feedback and support has been very positive and has prepared us for our next steps.

WTA is also exploring the possibility of seeking bridge funding from the 2013 legislature for key projects like the website, call center, postage and research. Regardless of our ability to get a long-term funding mechanism adopted by the legislature, we will need some funding in the interim to keep these items going and we believe it's appropriate for the state to assist with funding.

Visit Bellevue Washington (VBW) released the Bellevue Washington 2011 Visitor Impact Model at the August 6, 2012 Bellevue City Council meeting.

Estimates of Visitor Impact to Bellevue-2011

  • 848,000 overnight visitors plus 405,000 day-trippers to Bellevue spent an estimated $484,800,000 in Bellevue.
  • Local and state tax revenues directly generated by travel spending in Bellevue were
    $44 million.
  • Total employment directly generated by visitor spending was 7,634 jobs and $263.7 million in wages.

Direct visitor spending benefits hotels, retailers, restaurants, attractions, transportation services, and other businesses as well as supporting employment in Bellevue and the region.  Visitor spending also generates substantial tax revenues as most of the goods and services purchased are taxable at the point of sale.

vancouver riverwalkIn early August, the city of Vancouver USA was awarded a $750,000 Federal Highway Administration "Transportation, Community and System Preservation Program" grant to be used to extend the Waterfront Renaissance Trail for a half-mile along the downtown waterfront. The current five-mile trail in Vancouver USA draws visitors and residents alike to walk, bike, or jog the paved path while taking in the awe-inspiring views of the mighty Columbia River. The extension of the trail, as part of a larger Waterfront Park development project, will expand the extensive trail system already in place in Vancouver, improving the livability of the area and giving visitors the chance to experience the natural beauty of our town.

Tacoma Regional CVB

In July Pierce County was home to the 2012 Joint Base Lewis-McCord [JBLM] Air Expo. The event is widely popular and attracts visitors from miles around. This year the JBLM Air Expo attracted 145,000 attendees. The Tacoma Regional Convention + Visitor Bureau [TRCVB] was onsite at the Air Expo to provide information about the region. The TRCVB assisted 700 visitors and distributed 300 copies of the Tacoma + Pierce County Visitor Guide to inspire visitors to explore the area's attractions, restaurants and more.

Hoteliers in southwest King County are preparing to initiate the formation of a Tourism Promotion Area (TPA). Formation of a TPA would permit qualifying hotels to impose up to a $2.00 per room, per night assessment within the participating municipalities that would be dedicated to funding tourism promotion within the TPA area. The City of SeaTac has signed a letter of engagement with Pacifica Law Group to begin development of a Seattle Southside Tourism Development Authority. SeaTac will likely be the sponsoring city for the Tourism Development Authority that will govern the use of additional funds collected through the new hotel assessment.

San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau

San Juan bicyclers

Travel + Leisure has announced its 2012 World's Best Awards, ranking the San Juan Islands #3 on its list of Top Islands in the Continental U.S. and Canada. The Islands also received the distinction of being added to their newly created Hall of Fame for those on the "Top List" for ten or more consecutive years. The Islands' 2012 ranking as #3 out of 5 is the highest achieved so far; the magazine's readers ranked the Islands #4 in 2011 and 2010. Great press like this helps to drive more visitors and their "new" dollars to the Islands.

Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau

longview kites The Long Beach Peninsula communities host over 20 major visitor friendly events each summer (45+ annually), in addition to a concert series, beach clean ups, 4 outdoor markets and art walks. The largest event is the Washington State International Kite Festival, held annually during the third full week of August. Increased visitation from events is critical to the region's tourism-dependent economy, which is also supported by agriculture, aquaculture and forestry but, like many rural regions, lacks industry.

Kitsap Peninsula VCB

kitsapThe new Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails Map created by the Kitsap Peninsula VCB is attracting paddlers from around the region and was recently recognized by the National Parks Services and WA Water Trails Association. The map provides information about local marinas and launches and showcases small businesses that offer rental and gear services, lodging, dinning and other visitor information. It's estimated that paddler's contribute jobs and nearly $2 million to the Kitsap Peninsula economy. For more information about the map visit www.VisitKitsap.com/sports/.
