The Yakima Convention Center celebrated a very successful 2011. The facility hosted 554 event days last year, a 14% increase over 2010. Attendance to the events increased 17% to 149,543, breaking the attendance record of 143,800 set in 2006. In its inaugural year, the new Outdoor Plaza at the center had 27 groups utilizing the space. The Yakima Convention Center is a major driving force in tourism for Yakima County and is a cornerstone for downtown revitalization efforts. |

Ebey's Landing on Whidbey Island is the first national historic reserve in the United States, and the only one of its kind. This month a proposal to designate the community of Joshua Tree, California as a national conservation and historic reserve was met with approval - and the project is being modeled completely after Ebey's. Whidbey and Camano Islands are also home to nine state parks, including Deception Pass State Park and its iconic bridge, which is one of the most visited and most photographed places in Washington state. Parks are a draw for tourism, and changes to the Discover Pass to allow two vehicles in the same family to share a pass would benefit the islands' economy. |
Talk about a powerful group! The National Tour Association (NTA) Leadership Board met in Spokane February 3-6. These are leaders in the motor coach tour industry who represent companies across the country and Canada. Their businesses come in contact with tens of thousands of travelers every year. For some on the NTA Leadership Board, this was their first visit to Spokane. Much of their time was spent at Northern Quest Resort in meetings, but Visit Spokane made sure NTA Board members left Spokane with a fantastic impression! Board members were treated to a tour at the FOX Theater followed by dinner and wine tasting on their last night in town. Chosen because it's one of Spokane's crown jewels, an evening at the FOX was the perfect way to make a big impact on our key tourism clients! |

Stakeholders of Visit Rainier learned about why Tourism Matters in Washington State at their 2nd Annual Summit. Partners from around "The Mountain" gained important knowledge about how to leverage precious resources for improved economic benefit in the Mt. Rainier Region. Key partners such as Mt. Rainier National Park identified opportunities to achieve our common goals. The unified effort in marketing has helped to enhance this destination by providing one of the best visitor experiences in our amazing state. |
Visit Bellevue Washington delivered the first annual Bellevue Visitor Guide to Bellevue hotels and other distribution points at retail centers and City Hall on February 1. The guide is also available at www.visitbellevuewashington.com for on-line reading or download. The guide complements the destination's website that serves potential visitors and convention planners, by providing a comprehensive Visitor Guide that provides information about things to see and do while staying in Bellevue.
We believe this publication is the kind of magazine that hotel guests will consult while they are here or take home with them to help them plan their next visit. And, we encourage Bellevue residents to share it with visiting friends and family to help them discover our city. |

According to Dean Runyan Associates, in 2011 travelers to Seattle Southside spent $592.1 million in our community. Travel spend directly generated nearly $57 million in local and state tax revenues and employed 5,010 people in tourism related jobs. Tourism is a vital investment in our local economy. Visitor spending in Seattle Southside supports our community and helps us reinvest those dollars into becoming a more desirable travel destination and an even greater place to live, work and play. |
San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau

Media relations continues to give the San Juan Islands a great bang for our buck, and is critical considering our small budget and staff. Recent media coverage and accolades include: Wine Enthusiast magazine's "Destination - San Juan Islands" highlighting Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands; Los Angeles Times' "Cooking up gourmet adventures across the West" featuring Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes; and Trip Advisor's "Top 25 B&Bs and Inns in the U.S." featuring Wildwood Manor B&B. |
In an effort to continue to develop the international travelers, the Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission has invited Washington's coastal regions to form a cooperative to reach these long-haul markets. The Olympic Peninsula has been joined by Whidbey and Camano Islands Tourism and the Kitsap Peninsula VCB to present their regions at ITB in Berlin in March, and hope to participate in the fall sales mission to France and the UK. These sales missions are two of the four missions proposed and led by the Seattle VCB and the Port of Seattle in 2012. |

Since the state closed the Tourism Office in June 2011, the Washington Tourism Alliance (WTA) has been hard at work developing a new, membership based and funded association dedicated to promoting the entire state. It hasn't been an easy task, but with so many industries affected by tourism and the fantastic volunteers dedicating their time, WTA is poised to be successful!
The WTA will hold its 2nd annual Tourism Summit on April 5th at the Sea-Tac Hilton and Conference Center. This is an excellent opportunity to find out about all the exciting things WTA has been doing over the past year and get information relating to their proposed long term funding ideas. For more information visit www.watourismalliance.com
There are several committees within the WTA. All are working hard on projects to keep WTA moving. In a snapshot:
- Summit + Events = obviously the upcoming summit is top on their list, but the group is also focusing on five other statewide events- more details as they become available
- Marketing = the launch of a co-op campaign is due to be released by the end of the month and trade show participation is going well
- Long-Term Funding + Advocacy = this group is looking at models from other states and actively engaging those states to learn from their efforts. The group plans to have a draft funding structure ready by the April 5 summit for discussion
- Website = as of January 1 the WTA assumed ownership of the www.Experiencewa.com website. There are many transitions to be done with the website, but everyone is encouraged with the progress made to date
- Membership = this group is working on attracting new members and working with the Summit to really get the word out about WTA membership
- Communications = there are several current WTA PR opportunities coming quickly that the committee will work on, including the release of the Dean Runyan Statewide Economic Impact Report, the Summit on April 5th, and the new Official State Visitors' Guide. This group will also be populating the press rooms on www.watourismalliance.com; www.whytourismmatters.com and www.experiencewa.com/industry
I am pleased to be the newly appointed Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) representative to the WTA Board. I will be including brief WTA updates to you on a monthly basis, but please, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Thank you and remember Tourism Matters!
