Provent
Provent SR is a new form of sleep apnea therapy which has gained a great deal of media attention this year.  The device is designed to keep the airway open by restricting airflow upon exhalation, creating EPAP (expiratory positive airway pressure) via a microvalve.  It has been shown to be effective for all severities of OSA.

Provent SR can be used just for travel or 365 days a year.  A prescription is required whether purchasing the 10-night trial pack or 30-night pack.

CPAP and HypertensionTaking Blood Pressure

It has become
well-known that hypertension, or high blood pressure, can be the result of untreated obstructive sleep apnea.  As reported by DeseretNews.com, a new study conducted in Spain has shown that CPAP therapy, when used properly, could reduce the risk of ever developing high blood pressure and the health consequences that go along with it.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is now estimated to affect 3-7 percent of the human population.  However, there is still a large number of people who are still undiagnosed.  And amongst those that have been diagnosed, nearly 50% abandon the use of CPAP after just a few days or weeks.

CPAP therapy is still the gold standard for sleep apnea therapy. Surgical procedures and dental appliances have not been shown to be as effective.  There are many things which a good sleep practitioner can do to help those who are struggling with using the CPAP.

Microscopic StudyStudy Shows Possible Link Between Sleep Apnea and Cancer

It appears that the list of co-morbidities associated with sleep apnea continues to grow.  Studies in animals have shown that the low oxygen levels associated with sleep apnea encourage vascular and tumor growth.  Scientists are still a ways off from proving there is a correlation between sleep apnea and cancer growth.  However, one study performed by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health showed that people with severe apnea had a cancer-related mortality rate 5 times higher than those cancer patients who did not have apnea.
