Q&A

Can a person become addicted to sleeping pills?

Yes and no.  There are a few medications used for sleep that can be addictive.  However, most modern sleep medications are not addictive, at least not in the traditional sense of "addiction".  Most modern sleep medications can become habit-forming, so that when a person stops taking the drug it can be more difficult to fall asleep for a time.  This does not happen to everyone, however.  And, in most cases, if it does occur, that effect will disappear with time off of the medication.

Just a thought...

If your insurance policy has a high deductible or co-pay, consider purchasing your CPAP supplies  and submitting the bill to your insurance yourself.  CPAP providers who are not contracted with insurance companies are able to offer lower prices, which in turn will lower the amount your insurance company will apply to your deductible/co-pay.

Tip of the Month:  Identify Behaviors that Rob You of Sleep

We all have occasional nights where we struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night.  However, chronic insomnia is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

There are several common habits that might be causing your insomnia.  It is important to identify and eliminate any behaviors you have that could be contributing to insomnia.  Our November newsletter addresses "sleep hygiene" in the Q & A section.  In addition, you can find more tips to help you fall asleep in the following article: Tips to Help You Fall Asleep...and Stay Asleep.
Also check out this article from the National Sleep Foundation:  Identifying Invisible Sleep Stealers.

If you have eliminated sleep-stealing behaviors but still suffer from insomnia, it is time to see your sleep specialist for further evaluation.

If you have any helpful tips that you would like to share with our readers, please email them to mhertel@ezcpap.com!

 Most Americans Experience Insufficient Sleep

The CDC published a study that was conducted in 2008 via survey and found that most Americans report a perception of not having enough sleep or rest at least once in a 30-day period.  In addition, the National Sleep Foundation conducted a poll in 2009 that showed that the number of Americans who report that they get less than six hours of sleep per night increased from 13 percent in 2001 to 20 percent!  For more information on these studies follow these links:
