Q&A

Is it safe to put essential oils in my CPAP humidifier water?

Essential oils should never be put directly into the water of your CPAP humidifier as they coat the inside of the chamber and cause internal damage to the machine.  In addition, the silicone seals of most masks can break down from the oils which affects the quality of the seal.  There are aromatherapy products on the market specifically made for use outside of the humidifier.

Tip of the Month:  Know Your Insurance Benefits

Be aware of your insurance benefits!  If you plan to utilize your health insurance for purchasing your CPAP equipment, make it your responsibility to know what is and is not covered.  By knowing and understanding your own insurance coverage you eliminate the potential for mis-communication between you and your equipment provider.  You will also avoid charges that you were not expecting or cannot afford. Every policy is different, so even if a co-worker has the same carrier as you (e.g. United Healthcare), your coverage may differ slightly.

If you have a high deductible or copay for sleep equipment, consider purchasing online at a lower price and submitting the bill to your insurance carrier yourself.  Equipment purchased at a lower price means a lower out-of-pocket cost for you!

"Sleep may help us cope with outside world"

MSNBC.com posted an article last month that addresses a theory for why we, and all other animal species for that matter, sleep.  Why we sleep has been and still is a mystery, and scientists have been unable to establish a universal function for sleep that crosses all species.  According to the article, researcher Jerome Siegel at the University of California at Los Angeles has proposed that the primary function of sleep is to increase an animal's efficiency and minimize its risk as it relates to its environment.  For the complete article, click here.
